The Province of Alberta legislates and regulates the use of Community Revitalization Levies. The City of Edmonton must apply to the province for approval of the Capital City Downtown CRL Bylaw.

The province also contributes, however, by dedicating the portion of education taxes collected for the province to pay for the approved projects; (...) only the increase in school taxes from the assessment increases from the baseline in the CRL boundary is affected.

The CRL is limited to 20 years in length. Once complete, the increased municipal property taxes and school taxes dedicated to the CRL will return to civic and provincial general revenues.

Ken King wins. Why say something noncommittal like "I can't comment on that right now" or "when the appropriate time comes we will release information" when you can lead people on and build excitement each time? Brilliant, and I fall for it every time.

I'm not sure if I'm going crazy, and it was 3 in the morning, but I swear I heard an ad on the radio Sunday night/Monday morning from the Ironworkers union recommending contacting your MP to get this arena built in Alberta.

I only half heard it.

edit: hmm, I guess Edmonton really is no good. They're using TFW ironworkers on their arena project.

Ken King just needs to realize... it's okay to say "there is nothing to report at this time". We all get it that he's being asked on a daily basis when they're releasing plans for the new arena, but that question does not obligate him to giving a specific timeframe... when there clearly is either no timeframe, or he simply does not know.

This is what I agree with. No Ken King doesn't owe us any kind of explanation on the delays, but he also doesn't have to keep feeding the rumor mill. It's damaging his credibility when he keeps saying "Soon" only to have nothing happen. By the time he's ready to actually announce something a lot of people won't care anymore, boy cries wolf scenario

So the province would be supporting the overall redevelopment (on things needed whether the arena goes there or not) but they can say they're not paying directly for arena costs.

If the Flames/city can convince the province that the environmental cleanup of the area and roadwork on Bow Trail and 14th Street are badly needed (and they are, regardless of what is ultimately built on the West Village land -- with the counter-argument being that it's not a pressing need and could be delayed until things get better), infrastructure funding should still be available.

Seriously, environmental cleanup of decades-old contamination to help get an arena going probably wasn't what he had in mind.
