I wonder if the Flames have over valued their cap space or are they playing hardball. I could see the hardball as a legitimate reason why it hasn't happened, basically play by our rules or we don't play.
Or maybe the Flames have over valued their cap space but as JiriHrdina mentioned with the cap going down teams won't have a choice but to deal or make some out of the box moves (Ex. Clarkson/Horton)
I just hope if the Flames do take on a bad contract that they make it worth it, and when I say "worth it" I mean REALLY worth it.
Also the Flames better keep in mind that we have some serious cap space expenditure coming up in the next bunch of years. But really the time to take on bad contracts is now hopefully it happens.
|
That's precisely the point and why they are playing hardball.
There is really only room for one trade like this - once you do one, your excess cap space is significantly compromised.
So you have to hold firm and make sure it's worth it.

Not sure why this is in this thread, but that's about as perfect as it gets.
Perfect play by Prust - Habs need to do something to shake things up in general (and against TBay in particular) and perfect response by lightning as they jump him as a group.
Good stuff

Interesting that we offered Hiller for Jake Allen according to that article.
I'd gladly do that trade.

Yikes looking at Boston's cap situation is frightening. It doesn't look like they have much money to be flexible with and this summer they have ALOT of players to resign:
18 RFA's
(Brett Connolly, Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Spooner, Niklas Svedberg, Craig Cunningham, Matt Fraser, Jordan Caron, Alexander Fallstrom, Matt Lindbalm, David Warsofsky, Paul Carrey, Adam Morrison, Chris Breen, Tommy Cross, Rob Flick, Tyley Randel, Justin Florek)
7 UFA's
(Dan Paille, Gregory Campbell, Carl Soderberg, Adam McQauid, Matt Bartkowski, Simon Gagne, Bobby Robbins)
(according to http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams/BOS?year=2015)
I really hope the Flames are circling in like vultures...

^Hamilton is the only one getting a big raise. Nearly every RFA listed is a minor leaguer. Connolly and Spooner don't have arbitration rights nor much NHL experience. They likely sign for little more than their QO

What? Spooner is a full time nhler now. Svedberg is their back up. Fraser plays for the oilers after being claimed on waivers. Caron is gone already.
Cunningham probably sticks next year as he has some games in this season, probably warsofski aswell.

They already got that deal done - albeit just another 1 year contract.

Soderberg is also in line for a decent pay bump. The rest of those UFAs can go bye bye I think. The Bruins have enough in the system to replace cheaply if needed. Although I think they'll be wheeling and dealing a couple of brand name players if they miss.

Lecavailer was almost traded 3 times this season:
http://www.nj.com/flyers/index.ssf/2...e_and_why.html
Quote:
Lecavalier nearly was dealt to the Panthers just before the start of the 2014 NHL Draft in a June blockbuster that would have given the Flyers the top overall pick and sent forward Brayden Schenn and first-round draft picks in 2014 and 2015 to Florida.
According to sources, the proposed deal would have been completed if Panthers majority owner Vincent Viola hadn't called it off, presumably because he didn't want to part with the first-overall pick, which was used on defenseman Aaron Ekblad, who already is an NHL star as an 19-year-old rookie. (Another recent report by Rogers Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman stated that it was the Flyers who called off the trade because Florida wanted draft-lottery protection on the Flyers' 2015 first-round pick.)
The next month, the Flyers and Predators discussed a trade involving Lecavalier before and after the Predators found out last July 7 that veteran center Mike Fisher would be lost for seven months due to a ruptured Achilles. The deal appeared to have been very close to being finalized before it broke down.
According to sources, Nashville chairman Tom Cigarran called off both trades.
The speculation is that Predators ownership opposed the deal because it still hadn't forgiven the Flyers for signing restricted free agent Shea Weber to a 14-year, $110-million offer sheet in July 2012. The pact was heavily frontloaded in a way that made it very difficult for Nashville, a small-market franchise, to match and thus retain Weber, a superstar defenseman, but it was within the rules of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.
The Predators did ultimately match, but it appears that their ownership group never forgave the Flyers.
The proposed trade to Nashville that involved Lecavalier was allegedly a multi-player trade that would have provided the Flyers meaningful cap relief.
"Put it this way, if it was any team other than the Flyers, the deal probably has a better chance of getting done," a source said.
Nashville wound up adding another veteran center on July 15, signing Mike Ribeiro to a one-year, $1.05 million deal.

Vinny's agent also insinuating that Vinny would retire early if he were traded to another team in an attempt to get someone to trade for him.

oh how the mighty have fallen. Vinny isn't a bad player, he's just extremely over paid. It makes you wonder if guys near the end of their careers are looking at situations like these. I know it's in their best interest to get as much money as possible but it seems like he isn't respected as much and viewed as a cap dump. Would you rather be a player that teams still want like Jagr or someone that teams want to get rid of like Vinny?

That's exactly the kind of deal I can see Treliving making (or at least trying to make) this off season. I just wonder how serious Vinny is about retiring if he's traded.

I think that's a fair deal. Can see why the Coyotes said no though.
