By all accounts the Flames offered to take Mike Ribeiro and the Coyotes 12th overall pick last year at the draft, and the Coyotes were willing to go forward with the trade, but Ribeiro wouldn't waive his NTC. So they bought him out.

We also tried the same deal to take Cam Ward off the Carolina books along with their 7th overall pick, but that one was declined by the Hurricanes.

These deals don't really happen too often, but I really like the idea that we've been trying to make them. The Riberio one could have worked out quite well depending on what we gave up, especially given that he's had a good year for the Predators (on and off the ice).

I know we all aren't too fond of offer sheets after the ROR one... But if the cap is projected to go down or stay the same, would you guys offer sheet Dougie Hamilton from the Boston Bruins? They are going to have a hard time offering him a decent contract.

I love Dougie Hamilton. How much would it take to sign him and handcuff the Bruins? $7 million AAV?

I'm all for taking on an anchor contract (like Lecalvier at the deadline) but what Dougie would want would push way too far down the road for us to be comfortably signing the guys we will need to keep. We have the cap now and for a couple more years but when Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, etc need to be signed a Dougie contract is going to look real bad.

Trading something to obtain the RFA rights to Dougie? THAT I could definitely get on board with.

I think the Bruins would make other moves before losing Dougie Hamilton. Maybe Lucic?

Cap going down (possibly) + compliance buyout windows are closed.

I actually think Feaster was set up really well to take advantage of a similar environment, but the those damn owners voted themselves compliance buyouts, and changed everything. This off-season, I bet there will be a few cap-dump moves.

Feaster was set up to be the GM one of those teams with Brad Richards.

Dreger says Leafs and Sens talked about a Kadri for Zibanejad trade last summer.
Leafs wanted Zibanejad+ so the senators got cold feet and backed out.

Also said the trade doesn' make sense anymore so don't expect it to be revisited.

Is the cap projected to actually go down next season? I knew there was a chance if the CDN dollar drops enough but I haven't heard anything about the current projections being negative.

Louis Jean @LouisJean_TVA@BuffaloSabres are open for business. GM Tim Murray told counterparts he is willing to trade his second 1st round pick in '15 for right deal

Lol WUT? Why on Earth would Buffalo move McDavid/Eichel?
I mean the return could be great if they dropped down teh draft but still in the top ten but holy heck that seems absurd. And you just know the Leafs would move JVR+(or the equivalent of heavan and earth) For McJesus.

To be clear that says they are willing to move their 2nd 1st round pick.
They had at one point three. Their own, St. Louis and the Islanders.

The lowest pick of the Blues and Islanders goes to Winnipeg in the Kane trade.

The tweet refers to them willing to trade the pick that doesn't go to Winnipeg.

They have two first round picks, ie their second first-rd pick. It's STL first round pick I think

Their second 1st round pick, not their first.

Ah gotcha. Meh, no big deal then. Not sure what a 20-30 pick will net them. Could be an okay return if a team sees player they love in that range.
Upon further thought, I think they'd be focusing on adding a good roster player with that pick due to the large quantity they have in this years draft and next.

If anything it makes MacTavish's shopping Pittsburgh's pick for help harder now.
Buffalo and Edmonton have similar needs (i.e. goalie and players in the 22-25 range), and the pick Buffalo is offering should be better than Pittsburgh's.

I hope so, because we as a fan base have been hearing about the Flames ability to take advantage of "Cap-strapped" teams for years, and obviously it hasn't happened yet.

I know last year there were rumors about taking on Cam Ward and Mike Ribero for draft picks, but didn't go through because of the price (apparently both teams' first rounder).

I wonder if the Flames have over valued their cap space or are they playing hardball. I could see the hardball as a legitimate reason why it hasn't happened, basically play by our rules or we don't play.

Or maybe the Flames have over valued their cap space but as JiriHrdina mentioned with the cap going down teams won't have a choice but to deal or make some out of the box moves (Ex. Clarkson/Horton)

I just hope if the Flames do take on a bad contract that they make it worth it, and when I say "worth it" I mean REALLY worth it.

Also the Flames better keep in mind that we have some serious cap space expenditure coming up in the next bunch of years. But really the time to take on bad contracts is now hopefully it happens.
