Oh my. 2nd line? They either have big expectations for him or their team is going to be hurting next season. Or a bit of both.

Penciling Baertschi in as 2nd line LW? If so, that's one of the weaker left sides in the NHL.

The interesting thing is that their third line center right now is Linden Vey, and no real reason to expect he won't be there next year, too. That's an offensive player in a 3C role - could they play Baertschi next to him, with another guy with some offensive touch, and have an offense-oriented third line to pick up the slack should the Sedins fall off again next season? It's worth considering.
I've often thought that trying to fit players into pre-established roles (i.e. your third line must be defensive grinder physical types, your fourth line must be energy guys) created an undervalued set of players (and in turn a potential opportunity for a GM who's able to exploit it).

things change, some prospects fail, others exceed expectations

Regardless of the bounce-back, the Sedins *are* trending down, and top line talent will be an issue for the Canucks in the coming years. As it is now, even with them still producing (barring last season) they've been a middling playoff/first round exit team.
As the Sedins trend down, things get worse. To suggest Vancouver currently as the prospects to compensate for that, and their lack of prospect depth on the back end, adds up to a good chance there is some bottoming out yet to come.
This notion that because they've added some youth without blowing it up that they've avoided a bottom-out rebuild is pretty premature, and you tend to hear this attitude from a lot of Vancouver fans.

I would be surprised if hes on the 2nd line, he would have to earn it
they havent handed any young guys playing time under WD without it being earned

Except for the fact that basically every player selected from 14-22 in that draft looks better than Jankowski.

I think Brendan Gaunce from that same draft is in the same situation in which he can be claimed via waivers if he doesn't make the opening roster. Canucks may have to carry some young players and hope they can play.

Brendan Gaunce isn't from that draft; he's from 2012.

Do you go out and scout these players personally or just google search stats and draw all conclusions from those?

That could be a problem as it's the reason he's a Canuck today. That said if he can get some chemistry with a center it's not impossible that he could earn playing time.

Vancouver is really lacking players in Baertschi's age bracket. I think the idea is to 'rebuild on the fly', but we'll see how successful that is.
Their middle 6 forwards aren't a very solid group. Baertschi could have room in there.

Well he's the only one yet to play in the NHL and there are some pretty solid players in that list. So while some are allowed to have an opinion that Jankowski was a good pick, I'm allowed to have the opinion that there were a lot less risky picks available which I would have preferred to see.

Like with the Flames he's going to be given an opportunity to impress the coaches in training camp. Maybe this trade lights a fire under him as he just seemed kind of pedestrian when he was playing for the Flames.

Super job.
Great to mention it here, and be sure (like the others who hold this radical opinion) you bring it up at every given opportunity whether it's relevant or not.

Slotting him in the 2nd line is not necessarily high praise. This season, it's been the team's weak link especially while Bonino was out.

Since we're blaming people who have nothing to do with the trade now, I'd just like to step up on this soapbox here and point the finger at Dr. Bill Blair, Team Dentist. Clearly if not for his sub-par dentistry work, Sven would still be a productive member of the Calgary Flames.

Is Sven still eligible for the rookie tournament in Penticton? Gonna be real weird seeing Baertschi in a Nucks uniform in that tournament if he plays.
