Ya, ya, I quoted myself. Taking out the erroneous 3rd the Herald suggested, and, again, taking current standings, we get 1 out of every 13.3 picks for the first 80 picks. That's fantastic.
Now on nhl.com. Even they have it screwed up. Main trade page says 2017 2nd, but details page says 2015 2nd...

"We feel Sven Baertschi is going to be in our top six one day" - Benning. #canucks
Cam Tucker @CamTucker_Metro
#Canucks Benning says nothing made sense about possibly moving Kassian. Baertschi will go to AHL Utica.

For next year I am sure he will have more competition than that. I would think.

Good grief. That's not what a struggling AHL player should be saying/thinking.

Scoring Winger

It's a bit of a jump to compare him to erixon. Honestly, this is a good trade for both teams. I don't think Flames management dislike Sven, but it's clear for whatever reason he's just not progressing and other options overtook him in depth. The Canucks prospect cupboard is much more bare, so from an opportunity perspective, Sven will get a second (third?) chance there that he likely wouldn't have had here next year. It's probably a pretty realistic convo between him and the team where everyone realizes his future and the Flames future no longer align. At that point, as someone who wants to play in the NHL, he should want to move on, and the Flames turned it into something of value.

Would be nice to see a poll on how people feel about this, beyond these most vocal reactions.
For me it's not just that Baertchi got passed by so many of our other prospects, it's also that he's exactly what we don't need right now; a small, soft winger. Gaudreau is already in, Granlund is making a case for himself, we really cant' fit too many guys like that on the roster. We have size and strength issues as it is. The writing was on the wall for a good long while now, so the only real surprise was dealing him to the Canucks.
Who knows, maybe he'll fit better there. I honestly don't care that much. Treliving was right to move him, and the return seems about what you'd expect. Solid move in my books.

This is the 1st trade between the #Canucks & #Flames since March 5, 1991 (Dana Murzyn for Ron Stern & Kevan Guy). #NHLTrade

Did Iginla get traded?
Really great return. Don't think this is going to bite Calgary in the future, Sven is a known quantity for me.

When I first saw this news I was shocked and sort of mad. I've calmed down now though. If one looks past the fact that the deal is with the Canucks, I think most objective observers would say that a second is a fair return for Bärtschi at this point. Especially considering the fact that apparently he wanted to be traded.

His days were numbered here after he fell in disfavour with Burke and his play did nothing to change Burke's opinion.

Better too look at the number of "top 6" or even "top 9" forwards on this team going forward.

I take it the feeling is that Granlund will be 3rd LW, where I thought Sven would be? I guess that makes sense. I just personally think Baertschi will be better than Granlund, but that's why the guys in charge make the decisions. Time will tell.

Sven had finished the lockout-shortened season playing a bigger role with the flames and was looking every bit like a top six forward. Ever since Burke made those comments in the 2013 off season, he has struggled with the organization.
Because of that, I could easily see a spark igniting in baertschi's game and him going back to being a confident, creative, skilled winger... Who will no doubt get put on a line with the sedins next time the flames play them.
|
i don't agree with you at all in that 2013 season, he had 3 goals, and 7 assists, he never looked like a top 6 forward because he had huge consistency issues, and was apt to vanish too many nights. I like Sven but after that emergency callup when he was asked to actually play in an NHL role instead of just skate around like he did in his emergency call up he struggled with the NHL game.
Don't blame Burke for this, put the blame where it firmly goes, when you hear about a player going to the AHL and basically pouting and not striving to get better it should be ringing alarm bells. I'll give credit to him this year, because it seems like he was trying to address his work ethic and defensive issues. But with other prospects blowing by him, it just seems like Sven because a top 6 or bust suspect with the Flames having a lot more top 6 potential forwards with a stonger two way game then him.
I'm sad to see him go, but he didn't want to be here and with his deal ending, he would have been lost for nothing at all.
Getting a second round pick for a player that can't get his stuff together is a good deal. Vancouver has 20 games to fix his game.

Definitely. With Mason MacDonald selected last year don't think you'll see a goalie taken. Would love to see the Flames go on a run of blueliners.
Would love to see the Flames walk away with one or both of the Wheat Kings defenders, Provorov and Pilon.

Good trade, I like it.
Don't know why people are freaking over the fact we traded him to the Canucks.
