That is a really bad team right now and i think more than a few of those guys will have a re-birth if sent to a new setting. Yandle has some deficiencies in his game, no question, but he is an upgrade on every Dman in calgary save for Brodie and Gio.
He fits in with the whole "great skating, puck moving, offensive instinct" dman narrative that the Flames seem to be leaning to as a strategy. Offense starts from the backend on this team more than any team in the NHL IMO.
|
Except, he's not. He is basically a left handed Wideman.
Soft zone starts, a tonne of PP time and gets his head beat in 5v5.
If he costs you anything worthwhile (like a first or a top prospect) then he just brings nothing to the team that Wideman or Russell don't already bring.

Is Backlund really movable?
IMO, he's one of the guys we would be worse off without. Glencross won't be noticed if missing, but I don't think Granlund (for example) is really replacing what Backlund brings at this point. I really hope he isn't moved, unless the return is immense.

I see Backlund as the future 3C for this team.
I only move him if a replacement for him can be found who is similar to him but more durable and better at face offs.
Vladimir Sobotka for instance.
However, who knows.....maybe our future 3C isn't Backlund but somebody else already in the organization, like Bill Arnold or Mark Jankowski for instance.

I do too, and a very good and responsible 3C at that. I actually forgot how fragile Backs has been of late as he's looked so tough out there recently. Driving hard, and coming back for more I totally forgot he's a stiff breeze away from missing a few weeks.
Sobotka is a great example, but replacements like him don't come up often at all. Jankowski is really the only potential we have for filling that role (size and skill wise) but I don't know how his defensive game has been coming along.

I hope the Flames do something because this has been Feaster's team for almost two seasons now. Might as well should have kept him around.
They shouldn't make moves for the sake of trades but you would think Treliving would want to have some sort of impact on his team.

Oilers are looking for goaltenders. They were looking at what the Maple Leafs goalies in the last few weeks. #tvasports

A couple new teams have called on Chris Stewart in last 48 hours to check price. Boston continues to be in the mix. Nothing close now.

And? For a 23 year old franchise quality Dman, it's worth the risk IMO
