There are loads of cats in our neighbourhood. They are mainly all outdoor cats. It really isn't a problem.
To go way back, to before the bizarre tangent that just occurred, I believe that some of the problem relates to many neighbourhoods not having a large outdoor cat population anymore.
To some extent, cats tend to self regulate (when none of them are in heat, anyway) and stay away from the territory of other cats. There is a trend toward ownership of either indoor cats or tiny doglike creatures, that expand the territory of animals that would likely be pushed closer to home.
There is one cat in a two block radius around my house, and he rules the neighbourhood. The 56 tiny ####zus in that span must bring him chocolate cakes and beer to appease his wrath. There is also one normal dog he stays away from.

I don't care about an increase or decrease to rodent/bird deaths or why this problem is caused (more cats, now less cats so they roam more), it boils down to this: I do not want your cat in my yard, if I wanted a cat in my yard I would buy a fataing cat. Keep your cat out of my yard like a responsible pet owner or face my wrath (my wrath being limited to an increase in pound fees, as I'm not a complete cat killing a-hole).

Well that didn't work. The cat was out again this morning. Caught him again and he's going back to the pound today. Does the fine go up every time these idiots have to go bail him out?

It probably depends on the municipality, but we used to have a dog that was a runner and he was picked up by the pound a couple of times. The fine was more the second time and would have kept going up we were told.

I don't understand the dire hate towards cats some people have.
Boo hoo, it pooped in your garden, did that make you feel you have the right to end it's life and then carry some senseless grudge against them?
I own dogs. A husky running around tried attacking one of my chihuahuas, did I string it up because of what it did? No. I chased it off and called animal control.
I saw one of my neighbors German Sheppard's that was loose walk down the street with the broken corpse of a different neighbors Shih Tzu hanging from its mouth. Did I do anything remotely vile to it as anyone is suggesting to do with a garden pooping cat? No. Even though I was in fear for my safety, my dogs safety, every pet in the neighborhoods safety and the neighbors children's safety, I simply brought my dog inside, called animal control and the police. The dog was dangerous, so dangerous in fact they had to take it out back and shoot it.
The cat is pooping in gardens, not murdering neighbors pets and putting children in danger.
None of this was aimed at Nyah or the other humane people in here by the way
I wonder if any CPer might be willing to donate space for this... say, oh I don't know... a garage?

I had this one cat. One day I threw a big house party and I had the cat outside on his harness and he was just chilling outside watching us smoke joints and drink. He then wandered over the garden and started pooping in front of everyone. Everyone started laughing at him. But he just kept doing his business, and when he was done, he buried it. Everyone was shocked except for me. At that moment I was a proud cat owner. If he was a dog he'd have left a big steaming pile on the lawn for someone to step on. But this cat displayed intelligence and courtesy.

Jeeze .. I can't believe how many people have problems with just neighborhood cats. We have raccoon's everywhere, Deer in the spring show up , from time to time we might get a cougar/bear show up.
When I lived in Kamloops I was walking up Summit drive( in Sahali) drunk. A coyote popped out in front of me . He was a big boy. He was the size of German Shepherd. I just stood there . I was kinda scared, he was only 4 feet from me staring. I knew in Kamloops aggressive coyotes were known to be roaming around. He eventually hopped back into the bush and scuried along.
Anyways point is their just cats people. Relax.

What do wild animals have to do with people letting their pets roam freely? Raccoons, coyotes, and bears don't #### in my garden beds on a daily basis. Or how about the delightful combination of kids, a sandbox, and 2 or 3 neighbor cats. Mmmm, I can see the worms now.
I don't let my dogs out the front door to rummage around the neighborhood and through peoples yards for hours every day but for some reason it's fine for cat owners.

Location: Close enough to make a beer run during a TV timeout
Exp:
To add to that- due to neighbourhood cats roaming around I have to be careful with how long I leave my dog in my back yard. We are in a rental and the fence is low enough my dog could jump it if he wanted to give chase to a cat.
So just as the rights of your fist end at my face, the rights of your cat end at your property line.

So because you have wild animals and snaggletoothed varmints scaring you, everyone else should have to put up with OPP feces in our yards? And why are you so scared, anyway? Can't you out run them on your $9,000 bike?
My God, I am a selfish person. How could I possibly care about my little problem, when other people have bigger problems? I'll try to remember this logic if anyone I know ever gets murdered. After all, whole families have been murdered elsewhere.

The funniest part is that combustiblefuel's story boils down to "i once saw a coyote near Kamloops that didn't attack me, therefore your concerns about nuisance cats in Calgary are invalid".
I wonder - if the coyote in Kamloops bit him, would we be hearing a plea for the extermination of all municipal loose cats in Calgary?
