I presume this should be in green text.

But you can't keep a guy on the IR who isn't hurt is my point. It's reserved for injured players.

Doctors haven't cleared him to play yet. That is why he doesn't count towards the active roster.

I thought full contact was medically cleared. Is there a further distinction that doctor's need to make?

Yes. They need to medically clear him to play. Clearing him for practicing with full contact is just a step towards being cleared to play, nothing more. You know, as mentioned in the very first post of this thread.

I want to see him play at least one NHL game this season... Cause you never know he might be the catalyst that helps the Flames push for a playoff spot down the stretch. If he looks like he's not ready, send him back to juniors, no big deal.

The rest of the roster has been making a pretty decent push without Sam. If we didn't have so much depth already I think he might have a good shot of sticking. As it is, if we don't run into some injury troubles or make some trades, I just don't see where Bennett fits. I suppose he could replace Bouma on the Backlund line, but Boums has been outstanding lately.
The only way he sticks is if one of Raymond or Glencross are injured or traded. Even then they could look at bringing up Baertschi.

Yeah ultimately I believe he will be sent back to Kingston due to our depth and his absence from game time... But it would be cool to see him step in and contribute... We're at the point of the season that the flames might need to make calculated risks in order to secure a playoff spot..

It wouldn't surprise me to see him sent to Adirondack on a "conditioning stint" and depending on what Treliving sees there he will then either send Bennett back to the Frontenacs or he will get his "cup of coffee" with the Flames. This will be an incremental decision.

If the Flames are so weak they need to rely on a rookie with no NHL games to squeak into the POs, I think they are in trouble.
Aside from that it seems you just want him in because it would be cool to see him and maybe he'd be a big factor. That's the "I want to see my new toy" factor. I don't think its time for an experiment, when the Flames are playing well as is. And he won't be in a position to make big contributions in one game, from the third or fourth line.

I agree with you, but I think Bennett has game breaking qualities you underestimate that can be valuable down the tough stretch. If the Flames do go on a bad streak, I think his chances of playing a game in the NHL is increased, but as of right now, I think everyone is playing well enough that we don't need him.

per McKenzie on TSN:
final decision to be made in the next 1 or 2 days.
expectation is that Bennett will be returned to Kingston.
Flames want everyone in the organization's input before the final call is made.

I may be one of the few that doesn't want Bennett playing in the NHL unless he really earns it. If he does his AHL conditioning stint and is just the better player than anyone on that team, sure, let's give him his NHL stint. I don't want us throwing him onto NHL ice with 3rd line minutes and hope that he is productive. Not only do I think that hurts his development, but also gives a bad message to the Adirondack players that have been working their butts off to get some playing time on the Calgary Flames.

I don't want Bennett playing in the NHL unless he earns it either......however, my thinking is that if given the opportunity to earn it, he will.

However, what if the Flames could time it just right and keep him with the big club?
Flames have 25 games remaining.
If they could keep Bennett on the IR for two more weeks to the beginning of March.
If they were to send him to Adirondack on March 2 they would be able to keep him down for 14 days.
From March 4 to March 15 the Adirondack Flames play seven games.
Bennett could play in all of those games and not count towards his 9 game NHL limit.
His 14 days would end on the 16th and he would come back up to the Calgary Flames.
http://www.adirondackflames.com/schedule/
After the 17th the Flames have twelve games remaining on the schedule.
All they would have to do is sit Bennett for three of them.
There is one back to back game in the schedule so that is an easy one to justify him not playing, along with say the first game back the 19th.
Give him one more game in the press box after 4-5 games for a learning/observing opportunity and then you can keep him with the club and not burn a year off his entry level contract. Plus it allows for the team (not his junior club) to watch over his health and his recovery and reconditioning.
http://flames.nhl.com/club/schedule.htm
Helps the team out with added skill for the stretch drive to the playoffs and allows the team to move out assets like Glencross without feeling that they are short changing the clubs current chances.
|
This means that Bennett would not play for the Flames in the playoffs, should they make it, without burning his ELC year. No value in doing what you suggest IMO.
And based on how Hartley needs to build trust with players before deploying them regularly, I don't see how Bennett could possibly stick this year. Bennett needs to play. 15-20 games in Kingston playing 20min a night is FAR better than 6-8min in 8-9 NHL games and 8-9 AHL games.
It is asking a lot for an 18yr old who has not played any meaningful hockey for 11months to play pro hockey for the first time in a playoff race and contribute anything. Give the kid a chance to succeed, by starting fresh in the fall.

I think he goes to the AHL, and buys some time for the Flames, both to see how he does, and, figure out where the Flames are in two weeks. That, not coincidentally, also would be just post trade deadline.
Depending on where the Flames are standings-wise then, feeling-wise, and what moves they are able/willing to make at the deadline, and ultimately pull off, it factors into where Bennett is going (and for how long).
Something to be said for having a player who's projected to be on the team for 5-10 years, get a taste of what it takes during a playoff run as a player and as a team, assuming he's earned it on his rehab.
If the Flames make deals, then maybe he goes back to Kingston...or if they don't, he's the "free" player they couldn't acquire. Or they make deals, and they still want him, because he'll play protected minutes up to his 9 games, and then have a final decision.
All sorts of factors...but give him 2 weeks in the AHL; the Flames are headed out east after tomorrow's game, so they can keep a very close eye on him for the next week. See how the trip goes results wise, see what the trade deadline brings (or takes away), and on March 6th, figure out where he plays next.

Either send him down for a conditioning stint, or give him a single game on a depth role. If he holds his own or plays really well, play him again.
They should give him the opportunity.

Anyone know if any Kingston games will be televised? Would love to watch some Frontenacs games if/when he gets sent down.
