I like that Boomer isn't an annoying shock-jock or Rome wannabe, but often times I find the morning team to be a little too casual and off-topic. They are really solid when they focus on sports, but when they go on one of their rambling 15 minute conversations about nachos and barbecues and what they like to eat and do on weekends, it makes you want to shoot yourself.
Stick to sports (and 95% Flames) and they are solid. Although, the best part of the morning show are still the segments with Friedman and Duha. Brunt talks ways too much about baseball for me.

Yeah how about 25 Minutes of Boomer screwing around with Siri on his iPhone the other day. As if Siri hasn't been around for years, that was great radio.

The current morning show has none of those traits, it's a four hour clown show interrupted only by 15 minutes of quality Stephen Brunt-ness every tuesday and friday.
960 in general is bereft of on-air talent with the exception of Kerr and Steinberg, and if the higer-ups feel that the morning show is the flagship program I would like to see Steinberg take over.
|
All due respect to Steinberg... He's a hard working guy who s passionate about what he does, but that's not a good spot for him.
He's still a raw talent who can talk himself in circles. He'll get better but he's not ready.
A morning show needs to be light. All the successful ones on the radio have a basis in fluff. They also need a mixed cast with the straight guy, the goofball and 1 other element. You need to replace Boomer with a guy who can get laughs. Put Steinberg and Pinder together and Warrener sleeps in the corner (along with the listener) while those two talk about PDO with on air guests like Thomas Drance. It's a ratings killer that will lead to more of those adds offering testimonials for what advertising on "the fan 960 can do for your business" since there are no real ads to air.
Steinberg could likely do it if he was a clear #2 behind someone with a sense of humor who could direct the conversation better.

Yeah way too much dumb guy conversation for my liking. Im not sure how much of its an act, theres just too much of it when it runs through multiple segments. 2 minutes of it as a gag is fine but not 20.
The artist of the day schtick sucks too with all the reminiscing about his highschool days.
Rhett is good when he adds his insight based on his NHL experience. Pinder and new pinder are fine.
I think Molberg could be better if he lost the dumb fat guy schtick, assuming it is an act.

I just can't agree with this. Especially when Boomer is angrily shouting down Pinder whenever he tries to add an intelligent thought to the discussion. It honestly feels like Pinder is the 3rd wheel on the show and the other two do a terrible job at including him.
Ideally the show should have a dynamic of (logical/analytical/thoughtful) Pinder contrasted with Warrener (Emotional/previous NHLer/Visual) with someone hosting who can facilitate a discussion between the two sides, who can actually add something to both perspectives. All too frequently, Boomer is ganging up on Pinder or just dismissing him out of hand.
It frequently leads to dumbed down sports talk.

I would be surprised. Boomer has always taken pleasure in the downfall of Toronto. Even this morning is was bashing their team. I like Booms, hope he stays.

Pinder's love of data analytics is annoying beyond belief. I dont blame Boomer for shutting him down.

Get used to it. Advanced stats are here to stay. We need to at least talk about them and not just pretend they don't exist.
I also don't like Rhett's name being in the title of the show, he is not even there half of the time. 2 hours a day for 3-4 days a week?
Pinder deserves some respect, he is very knowledgeable and keeps in touch with the pulse of the city. The only pinder knock I have is when he was smacking his gum giving Johnny G the player of the Month award.

Robert Vollman: good
He's a guy who has a genuine stats background and uses them in a measured and responsible way. He talks to Rob Kerr on Wednesdays at 5:45(?)
Thomas Drance: Bad
Some Canucks blogger who completely judges a player, a team, and a hockey game by the corsi. He came on the morning show once when Boomer way away and talked to Pinder and said some really stupid **** which they mocked for weeks after.

That would be a risky move. He's got a good thing going here in Calgary and moving to Toronto would be hard with a wife and 2/3 kids. What if it doesn't work out? that Blundell is supposed to be a wing nut, right?

I like Boomer and would miss him every morning. He gives me a laugh and that's refreshing. The Fan should find someone to replace Steinberg on Hockey Central and let him go from 1:00 cause that 1:00 hour gets really stale.

Maybe but not in their current form. They will become obsolete when new technology allows for actual possession stats etc. Nobody will give a crap about Corsi in 20 years because we'll have actual advanced stats!

Yeah, I dunno. I hear them every morning. Pinder will bring up advanced stats to support his stance on a player when Boomer just dismisses his take. He continually says it isn't the be all end all, but another way to look at things.
It's usually Boomer goading him on about advanced stats. In previous years, he always trashed Backlund for being nothing while Pinder would defend the play of Backlund, using advanced stats when Boomer would be continually asking "what does he do", or claiming Backlund "does nothing". Kind of like a guy who watches hockey but can't see the fine details or whole the picture on players.
I do think Boomer is a good guy, can be genuinely funny and the show is decent. Rhett is always good for a laugh or two and Pinder takes all their #### in stride. Like I said, I listen every morning commute, so they must be doing something right.

Good riddance.. I have never been a fan. I like Rhett and I like Pinder but Dean has a habit of talking down to listeners. The whole "If you don't like it, turn the station" attitude really got old. Hey "Boomer" it is actually your job to encourage people to listen to the station, dolt.
He was ok(ish) talking about the Flames but his sporting knowledge was pretty sub par for a guy whose job it is to have a pretty solid knowledge.
Also what is the obsessive need for him to karaoke on a morning show? The last thing I want to hear is a bad singer butchering songs ESPECIALLY at freakin' 7:00am. I am terrible at karaoke so guess what I DON'T DO IT (often).
Anyway Dean, go away and never comeback..

If Boomer wants to go to Toronto I wish him the best of luck and success in his new position!
A few extremely rude and thoughtless posts in this thread.
