This is what happens when someone with no previous development experience is leading a project of this scope. King might have a strong handshake and be a nice guy, but you and I have about as much knowledge of large-scale development as King did at the beginning of this process. Chances are he's learning as he goes, which is why it's taking this long. Yes, there are some complexities, but it's not exactly the Big Dig either. It shouldn't take a half decade to release a plan for a new arena/stadium.

The seats are HUGE. My favourite part. Way less potential for a leaner to block your view

I was supposed to go to the town hall with Bettman last night but couldn't make it.
Did anyone here attend? If so, can you post a summary?
This whole new arena thing has become a PR debacle. We were promised news 5 years ago and still nothing. This isn't Soviet Russia with mounds of red tape that must be cut before you can take a piss!

I went there for a Rangers / Jets game in 2013, and I was incredibly impressed with the facility. Three different levels of concourses and amazing liquor and food choices - Rangers fans are spoiled rotten, I tell ya. My GF and I sat in the nose bleeds with some true blue collars New Yorkers, getting drunk and screaming profanities at the Jets. I had such a great time there, I can't wait to go back.

Most of it is staying out of the mainstream media. PR debacle is a bit strong.

How do you know King is leading this and screwing it up? Ever stop and think that the President of the Flames may just be out front while the actual expert works behind the scenes, like 90% of the multi-million dollar companies in the world.

King is directly involved in this. He isn't just 'out front'.

I went. Don't have time to post a detailed summary but I'll say this:
-Good questions from the fans, covered a lot of topics
-Bettman said NHL in Pyeongchang Olympics decision a "balancing act" and then focused on all the negatives. Was called out for it by the fan; his reply was "I said it was a balancing act, obviously the fans and players like it"
-Asked a second time about expansion Bettman said in a 31 team league he couldn't see a 17/14 split and said the Detroit and Columbus wouldn't move back west. When it became blindingly obvious the implication was the next team is in the west he quickly said "this isn't a decision, it's a visceral feeling"... even so I think Seattle/Vegas are clearly in the lead ahead of QC/Markham.
The rest of the discussion wasn't anything different that what you have heard before. He loves his job, CGY has a great ownership group, doesn't see the need for changing the 2/3 point system, FX won't materially impact the cap, but for the C.A.P. in the '90s we wouldn't have a team. etc.
Nice of the team to organize the event.

I want the Flames to do it right, but I must admit that I am a little disappointed Edmonton's building will likely be operational before we have an announcement or a shovel in the dirt.

Say what you will of Bettman but hes no coward. I have a lot of respect for him and he does not shy away from the tough questions or harsh criticism.

King may not have development experience, but guys like Murray Edwards and Clay Riddell have a little bit of business acumen. I imagine building an arena isn't too taxing for them.

Why does the age of their building have any impact on ours or the process? Both teams started talking about a new arena about the same time. The Flames are a much better run organization so they should have been able to get their poop in a pile a lot quicker than those clowns up in Shelbyville. Unless there is something crazy impressive about the Flames building, say like adding a domed stadium for field sports, then it is sad the Oilers managed to beat the Flames to the punch and already have their building on its way to completion.

Why is there an assumption that KK is messing this up, because it's "taking so long". As fans, we want this sooner, and we want info sooner, and I don't disagree that KK and the Flames made a mistake in regards to "fan relations" by putting this on our radar so long ago, given how long it's taking.
No doubt the Flames need a new rink in what I'll call the near future, but KK is only messing this up if from a business perspective the Flames really are way behind what their needs are for a new rink and the subsequent benefit of the new rink. There will be benefit for them for the new rink, so I'm sure they want it, but I'm willing to wager that from a "business perspective" this new rink project isn't even anywhere close to as behind schedule as we the fans feel it is because we are clamouring for new info / updates. I would be surprised despite all the talk about soon to be oldest rink the league etc.. if the Flames have yet hit the "desperately" need the new rink stage yet.

That's because of the renovations where they added boxes. Prior to the renovations the lower bowl was significantly larger. It's also part of the reason it's not feasible to renovate again.
