He was honored last night by B'nai Brith here in Calgary. Rob Kerr mentioned it this afternoon. B'nai Brith 64th annual dinner.

It will work to Calgary's benefit. Calgary's looking at what Edmonton is doing here very closely. We'll be getting the better end product, trust me.

Because Calgary>Edmonton. No sound rhyme or reason behind it. I hate that city.

The Oilers also have one of the slimiest owners in the league who used the thread of relocation to get what he wanted from Edmonton and they buckled. I'm all for having to wait a little longer if it shows that the Calgary ownership group has a bit more respect for the city

The guy made a fortune off of boner pills and stool softeners. What else do you expect?

I expect his new arena to be shaped like a giant penis and balls!

I caught the tail end of Francis saying something there tonight about it. I thought I heard him say to expect something very soon. Did he say anything else of any interest, or was he just being Eric Francis?

Ken King said at the Gary Bettman Q&A that he expects to be on "this stage and others like it very soon" showing us pictures of the new area. No time frame was given, just soon.

Unfortunately he has been saying 'soon' for at least the last seven years. I like KK, but his definition of 'soon' is a lot different than mine. Maybe he means from a geological standpoint.

If only I had a million dollars for every time I've heard that the arena is "soon."

Bettman also had a shot at King about the Dome, mentioned that it averaged 3-4000 less lower bowl seats than most arenas.

Bettman also said the Dome will soon be the oldest arena in the league- 10 years older than the next. I didn't realize that was the case. The group sitting behind me were opposed to an arena if it means public funding- which will obviously be the thoughts of many.
edit- perhaps I just didn't hear correctly what Bettman said, but I just clued in that MSG will obviously be the oldest arena for many years to come. I can't imagine building a new arena in Manhattan is an option even if they wanted to? With Red Wings, Islanders, and Oilers all getting new arenas in the coming years, the Dome will be the second oldest.

Yup. Currently, the only buildings older are the Coliseum in New York, Rexall in Edmonton, and Joe Louis in Detroit. All three are scheduled to be replaced over the next three seasons.
MSG is technically still older (opened in 1968), but they just spent $1 billion to completely rebuild the arena in recent years, so it's essentially a new building on the inside.
After the Saddledome (opened in 1983), the next oldest arenas are the Honda Center in Anaheim, and the SAP Center in San Jose, which both opened in 1993.

MSG had a 1 billion dollar reno recently. It's very much a modern arena.

Of those, the Honda Center feels much more modern. The SAP Center is a cool building for its own reasons, but visiting both makes you amazed they are the same age. They really missed the boat with the layout of the SAP Center.

I get the same feeling with St. Louis and Chicago. The Blues arena is a dump.
Although, heck, Saddledome is only 4 years newer than Joe Louis but it seems much, much newer.
In the case of SAP Center, the Sharks will probably end up in a new arena before the Flames do. Plans are well underway there.
