Kempe has a lot more value than McKeown I think. If McKeown was left handed would you have any interest in him?

It's the fact that he's a defenseman that interests me.
Where does Kempe fit into the Flames' organization?

McKeown was drafted 50th and is trending down, while Kempe was drafted 29th and is trending up. And Kempe is playing RW now in Modo. He also played wing on the Nylander line at the WJC, and tied for the team lead in scoring. He's big, he has jam, and he can skate.

IMHO, he would immediately become the team's 2nd best prospect on the wing, only a half-notch below Poirier.

Hartley can probably whip him into shape.

Yep, Kempe's a great power forward prospect, he's going to be a player. Him, Poirier and Ferland in the team's top 9 would be frickin' amazing. Add in Gaudreau, Bennett, Monahan, Klimchuk and Backlund... wow... just, wow...

Well, I'm glad that's agreed on then. Just under a thousand posts, and I think that we have our value of Richards.
This, of course, would cause a burgeoning need to sell a veteran or two. And the wheel continues to turn...

Richards having nightmares of Hartley's bag skates. Not sure how one of the most out of shape players in the league would fit in with the most in shape team in the league. He'd be scratched until he's in game shape.

I think the Flames would be happy to leave him in the AHL until he didn't want to be an out of shape player any more.

This is one reason as to why I don't have much of a problem with this trade. The AHL team has better conditioning than most NHL teams, and Hartley demands even more from the NHL roster. The culture that Calgary has built here would rinse the last bit of good hockey out of Mike Richards. Playing here might be the best thing for his career.

Mike Richards is one of the most out of shape players in the league?

Well it's documented that he was told to get in better shape in the summer, and he is having an even worse year now... so it's a fairly reasonable assumption. There aren't a lot of out of shape NHLers in the league at all, so it wouldn't take much of a slip up to drop to the bottom ranks.

The Flames strength and conditioning coach was with the Kings last year. He can give Treliving a good sense of Richards training and fitness

I don't think it's a matter of liking or not liking bag skates. I'm sure he's in pretty good shape. The issue is that he's just not capable of performing at a high level anymore. He could do bag skates for 3 months straight and not get any better. I'm sure the Kings have tried everything already.

According to McKenzie Richards showed up to Kings training camp in better condition this year.

Which is actually even more of a red flag for me, as if he's playing this poorly while being in improved shape, then where does he go from here?

He's done. Anyone who thinks he has more than half a season left of 4th line quality hockey is kidding themselves.
Then remember how that contract lasts 5 years beyond this.
Seriously. I want Toffoli and two 1st rounders for taking on this contract.

Do you think he has market value if Calgary then flipped him while retaining say $1.5 mill per season?
That makes his cap hit for the acquiring team $3.75 per.
At that price I think you might find some takers for him.
I see him as a guy we may be able to turn and flip for assets as well.
