I guess the plan would be: lose Richards, lose Toffoli, use the cap space to first get a rental for the POs and then sign a UFA or trade something else to replace Toffoli long term.
Not a pretty picture, and Ray Ferraro was right - not buying Richards out was a huge blunder.

I could see Baertschi thrown in a deal like this to sweeten the deal. I really don't think Toffoli is happening unless we give them Poirier, and even then...

Good Point. Yandle is available and I could see LA targeting him. Maybe a package could be built around those two? More pieces would have to be part of the deal on LA's end obviously.

The thing that I like most about a situation in which a player has to be traded, such as this one, is that there is always a place for the illogical. An absolute wildcard GM.
Example : Philly trades Lecavalier+2nd to Vancouver for Darren Archibald+Derek Dorsett. Philly then trades L.Schenn+750K retained to LA for Richards+1st. Hextall trolls everybody. Vancouver has $8 left on the cap and LA saves 2M for the next 3 years. Jonah Hill fist pump.
Realistically, I think it's 50/50 Buffalo, Calgary. You would have to think that their 1st is in play.

I wonder if Shore is an asset that could be used. It wouldn't interfere with the Flames present lineup but he is seen as an NHLer. And they would need a body to fill the centre role.

Would LA do this trade?
Mike Richards
Roland Mackewon
2015 first rounder
2017 first rounder
for
Matt Stajan
2015 second rounder

LA would accept immediately. Treliving would laugh and laugh and laugh...

Impossible, there was no way Lombardi could have foreseen the situation.

I doubt it, one of Mckeown or the 2015 first, but not both IMO.

I would change Stajan to Raymond and the 2nds to 3rds, just to be a little less reasonable. I think that neither side would hang up right away.

I am okay with it if Calgary decide to make the trade with LA except replace the 2015 2nd rounder with Raymond. LA is so desperate to get rid of Richards bad contract that they might be willing to take some short garbage contract and LA also trying to sweeten the pot. To tell you the truth I am hoping Calgary does not go after Richards at all. I would even change the 2017 second rounder to a 4th rounder or Derek Engelland. If LA doesn't like it, then too bad.. a win-win for the Flames.

Is there something bad about 2016 that I don't know about?

My guess would be that L.A. wouldn't want to lose their first in consecutive years. Either that or a meteor hits Earth.

Actually I should clarify. I sounded kind of ambiguous at second read (and sort of jerkiish... sorry)
Richards + 2015-1st + 2016-1st for Stajan is more than fair given all the various factors invoved. No salary retention on either side.

tossing this offer out there what do you guys think
To Calgary: Richards (Kings eat $1.8M per season), Toffoli
To LA: Backlund, Engellend (Flames eat 900K in salary)
Flames get Richards at $3.9M, Kings get Engellend at $2M

Would rather trade someone else than Backlund. Give them Granlund or the other Shore.

I like it.. We get a skilled winger in return. If anything, I'd hate to give up Backlund, but it may almost be necessary seeing as how we have a logjam at centre. Id rather offer stajan, Raymond, or Granlund instead.
