See now this is where I am interested, we see a lot of names thrown around here but how realistic is it that they part with a guy like Toffoli? It seems crazy to me that even with full salary they would give him up. I think a guy like Nick Shore is a bit more realistic, but then on the flip side if I was the Flames that wouldn't be enough for me to pull the trigger.
Then it gets even more confusing if you think about other players becoming involved.

Nick Shore would be ironic, there were articles earlier this year that Lombardi saw Shore as a Richards/Stoll replacement

How about we takes all of richards contract, get toffoli, and then give them engelland or smid.
or Smid/Engelland and Raymond for some contract retention + Toffoli.

Why would they do that???? They'd be a much worse team now and in the future, with no real benefit other than a couple million in cap

How about C Mike Richards (25% retained salary), D Derek Fobort and a 2015 2nd round pick for LW Brandon Bollig?
Calgary gets a big defensive prospect out of it, another pick in this year's draft, and makes room on the LW side for Wolf or Ferland? Los Angeles gets their cap relief and can do what they want with Bollig.

IMO, if you want Toffoli in a Richards deal Jooris or Backlund is likely someone the Kings would ask for. Flames may still have to add.

No team trades for him unless it is a slam dunk win....except Edmonton because they are borderline.....y'know.

I have a hard time seeing the Flames/Kings as trade partners given the Wild Card race.
With that said, a more realistic scenario could include Backlund from the Flames in order for the Kings to send Pearson/Toffoli with Richards. I think the value here would be enough for the Kings to part with one of their highly coveted young forwards, and as a Flames fan I'd still make this deal.

Maybe if there was no salary retained. I think salary retained really kills any trade value for the kings.

I would absolutely send Jooris in a deal that got us Toffoli.

We'd have to start very high when negotiating, and only go higher. The thing is, people would pay a lot just to get rid of $5m of cap space over say, only 2 years; so whatever the Kings offer has got to be relative; whatever a team would pay to get rid of that cap space over 2 years, you double it and add the original half. If they're not adding a legitimately exciting player or prospect along with a top pick-or-2, they can forget it.
What is it, $5m-odd per for the next 5 years? That's a hell of an anchor to carry.
Edit: forgot to mention that we'd be saddled with the recapture penalties as well (wouldn't we?). Return goes up.

There is no way we get Toffoli, who's part of the Kings' long term plans. That was just Treliving or Nonis (the story actually didn't say which) asking for the moon. It means the realistic deal is a player a step below Toffoli.
Lombardi made a dumb move in not buying Richards out, but generally he doesn't make dumb moves, so I'm not convinced he can be "taken" in a deal.

I say we bend them over or let them choke on that contract. Let them get desperate, because it's going to happen.
That or someone else can have Mike "reclamation" Richards.

I think the recapture penalty largely affects LA, not the acquiring team, depending on when he actually retires. It is essentially the (advantageous) difference of the money paid versus the cap number spread over the forfeited years of the contract. The recapture issue might be an argument that the return should be less than expected.

Yeah, people expecting Toffoli back are dreaming. Much more likely is a 1st rounder or a prospect like Kempe.

Had an idea!

Everyone is saying don't help the Kings, but what if a team like Buffalo helps them and gets some prospects/roster players as well that the Flames could use? If we are in a position to make a good deal, we make it.
