Neither is Lombardi, he did after all put together the team that has 2 cups, and made the move to bring Darryl Sutter in.
Both GMs wanted to have their cake and eat it too.
Lombardi is hoping for someone to just take Richards for a roster player like a Stajan, with less term and caphit.
Calgary management for some reason is still delusional about playing some sort of league banker role where everyone is going to bend over and give us their valuable assets to get rid of contracts.

That leaves us with plenty of capable LW, C, and RW.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Poirier
Sven-Bennett-Hudler
Bouma-Backlund-Jooris
Wolf-Stajan-Colborne
Jones
Byron
Look at that, no need for Mike Richards, plenty of guys who can fill in at RW. Hell, that lineup still doesn't leave room for prospects like Klimchuk, Shore, Granlund, and Reinhart who have all shown very positive signs.
Eventually near the end of his contract, Stajan's super-easy to move to clear space with a mere 3.125m cap hit, a character guy who wins faceoffs, PK, is a fantastic passer, and has never made it so that a team feels it necessary to get rid of him (first Philly, now, LA) hell we've signed him to two extensions since acquiring him - he must be doing something right.
If you can get a sure-fire deal on a legitimate Top Line RWer like Corey Perry, sure you make some moves. Mike Richards is en route to the AHL.

If there is a prevailing opinion that the rebuild is over, then there is no reason to continue accruing draft picks and prospects. In this situation, we shouldn't pick up Richards. This scenario counts on everything going 'right' though. Which would be awesome if it does.

I might be the odd one out here, but i'm actually all for getting Richards as long we can get the Kings to retain at least half of his salary while also receiving Toffoli in return. Toffoli is good player and would fit nicely here on the RW. Plus with Glencross most likely being gone by the end of this year we would have almost no hit to our cap space. The other point is that the cap is going to be going up at the end of this year.

I still think there is plenty left in Richards. He played well in the playoffs last year, and knows how to win at the NHL level.
The big problem is still that 5.75M, and no one wanted to do the Kings a favour in taking it off their hands (the Kings have holes they need to fill - they need goal scoring and they need help on D thanks to Voynov). The idea that we could possibly get Richards, a guy who can play anywhere up and down your depth at 4.75M (1M or so retained), an additional asset (good pick or prospect), and move out one of our not-so-good contracts/players (Staj or Smid specifically in my eyes) - if something like that becomes available, I'd be ecstatic to see Treliving make that move.

It would be interesting to see the CP meltdown if this trade actually happened.

If the Kings retain half salary, Toffoli is off the table for sure unless something of really good value is also coming back to the Kings.
Also don't be too sure on the cap increasing next season.

Give them Smid or Engelland in return. use Richards contract to help us maintain cap floor, then slot wotherspoon in the line up to replace smid or engelland.

I think it's a good risk. He's a winner. Young Players need winners around. He knows what it feels like to lose in the finals, and knows what it takes to win. Hard nose guy.
And he can be Paul Byron's replacement.

You continue drafting with your own picks and trust in your scouting to keep the farm filled with guys who can replace eventual pending free agents like Jones etc. You continue to consider any trades where you're swapping depth for legit top line talent. It's still a rebuild, so we don't quite know just what ceilings we have for guys like Colborne, or what Floors you have for guys like Poirier. All you know is that they're good assets to have and you're better off just being patient and steady. Even if this year or next year the team doesn't make the playoffs. We're in a really good position right now because we let guys like Cammalleri walk, we got rid of guys like Tanguay and even Boowmeester. Flames committed to a genuine rebuild.
Think for a second that you're swapping Boowmeester for Mike Richards when you talk about our current cap space. I just cringed.

How are they being delusional about it?
Teams want the Flames to take on bad contracts, why should the Flames be nice and do it for free? Of course they should be asking for valuable assets. Why wouldn't you?

Can't agree with that. He kept being moved down the lines. He went from being 4th on the team in points in the regular season to 12th. He was a minus 6 on a Cup winning team (tied for the highest minus on the team and one of only 5 guys with minuses, the rest all being bit players).

Just in the sense that it's something that's never happened ever yet they keep talking about it.
Every year we hear about the cap squeeze, all these teams so tight to the cap, yet they find a way to make it work without sending Calgary 1st round picks.

To be fair to Treliving, he has never publicly spoke about the assets he was seeking. He hasn't really talked about the cap space specifically that I can recall. He's pretty vague usually about what he's doing. I think "we are looking at a bunch of different things" is his favourite thing to say.
Feaster on the other hand, talked a lot about it and very specifically.

I don't think Flames management is being delusional. If LA wants to unload the contract, they have to make it worthwhile. If Calgary thinks the addition of Toffoli or picks, prospects makes it worthwhile, then that's exactly what they should ask for.
It would be silly not to. If LA doesn't want that deal, too bad for them and we move on.

Not worth it. Richards is seriously only barely better than Stajan at this point of his career. He's not going to be even remotely close to the player he was in Philly. Those all-star days of his are a thing of the past.
And even if the Flames are stupid enough to bring him here, he'd likely only be replacing Stajan on the 4th line anyway for a lot more money and barely any on-ice upgrade over Stajan.
Richards is most likely NOT that good anymore. I know it's hard to accept that Richards may be closer to being over the hill at age 29 than regaining any great hockey form but it happens. Just ask Devin Setoguchi.

There are two cup winners on the team right now, one of whom is a really good player (Hudler). And there is also a guy who lost in the finals (albeit no one likes him).
And Byron? Is Richards gonna bury more breakways? He'd have to get them first.

Smid or Engelland does not get you Toffoli + Richards at 50% retained.

All terrible deals for Calgary. I think we need that first round pick coming back or the Kings eat $2M per season on the deal

Agreed they all are stupid ideas....wth Walker? Help a rival out of a pickle and also lose the trade??? They absolutely have to over pay the Flames for this favour don't they?
