I know. I'd feel like total #### if I were Richards after hearing what Lombardi's supposedly thinking of him according to that Pierre LeBrun thing.

So his GM goes out on a limb for Richards and keeps him on the defending Cup team with the understanding he will rededicate himself to conditioning. And presumably he doesn't do the work over the summer.
And people honestly want to bring this guy in as a mentor?

So if both sides agree to nullify the contract does that work?
Or is Richards locked into this deal until retirement?

No one is saying claim him, we are saying TRADE for him if it works for us because he is a significant upgrade on stajan.

To whom much is given, much is expected. Richards simply hasnt been bringing it lately.
The guy is underwhelming in the regular season but hes a playoff warrior.

Take a look at this below.
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Lombardi doesn't expect Richards to be claimed on waivers. Says looked at trade route but no fit. Hopes Mike will re-discover game in AHL
Ouch!

He'd have to be put on $125 waivers for the purpose of a buy out. And there's a certain amount of cap that sticks on L.A for ten years instead of paying the remaining 5 in full. Not certain on the dollar amount of what sticks if they buy him out.
Hind sight says they should have used one of the two post lockout buy outs on him. Bad gamble since he's been buried on the depth chart.

Doubt Richards will agree to nullify with $22 million still left to be paid out on his contract.
If he nullifies he at most likely only gets a 1 year $3 million deal from another NHL team - if that.

I dont know though, Richards "knows how to win," just like Mr. Five Rings Kevin Lowe, those intangibles are probably worth 28 MILLION DOLLARS, and even if they're only worth half that he can still be a good "mentor" for our younger players on how to get through practice hungover.

Not to mention, Dean Lombardi has historically been very local to his guys... the way things went downhill for Mike Richards, we do not want him anywhere close to being a "mentor" for this team.

Exactly. I would only take him if Stajan is going somewhere else just because he is an upgrade on him. Not a huge amount. He does have attitude problems. It would also depend on what we would be getting to do the Kings a favour.
I wouldn't take Richards by himself even for free. We would need to delete a decent contract to make it make sense.

Rings earned 30 years ago by a guy who can't affect the play on the ice is vastly different than 2 rings in the last 3 years as a player.
C'mon man.

Pretty much the same, he's on a one way contract.
