Random thought -- when was the last time we had a really good French-Canadian player on our team. Would Tanguay qualify? Maybe Marty Gelinas?

The only real stars were all guys who we let slip through the cracks (St. Louis and Giguere come to mind; Marty Brodeur to a lesser extent as we could have drafted him but didn't)...

Poirier:

2nd in the Fastest Skater Competition with 13.960 seconds
3 for 7 in Accuracy Shooting (ran out of time, did not finish 8th shot)
Unable to score in breakaway relay

Poirier, so far, has been as good as anyone selected outside of the top 10 in the 2013 draft. Looking like a better and better pick all the time.

Redline had Poirier at 20th on their list and said he was one of the fastest rising players in the draft. You can't look at one list and think that's consensus.

Yup. Chances are ISS and CSB had Poirier as low as they did because they are spread out trying to cover everybody and get fewer looks at guys. The teams themselves will zero in on targets and spend a disproportionate amount of time scouting specific players - or in the case of Gaudreau, making it appear they aren't scouting them at all.

Poirier is one prime example of why I don't rush to judgment on guys I've never heard of.

And just because, I still stand by my draft day prediction Hunter Shinkaruk will never crack the NHL.

ISS 55	79
Button 14	29
Prospectus	36	62
McKenzie	41	46
Excluding CSS ranks as they separate NA and European skaters/goalies, the average is

Jankowski: 36.6... Poirier 48.4

Granted, Button may be a Jankowski homer so lets exclude him too.

Jankowski: 42.25... Poirier 53.25

This certainly implies from the "expert" opinions Poirier was a bigger reach than Jankowski.
This is a great quote from Sureloss that shows the Poirier pick was actually a bigger "reach" than the Jankowski pick. Just something to think about.

Credit to the scouts on this pick. Looks like they have a winner.

I think I read somewhere that the proximity to Ottawa worked into Poirier's selection. Scouts getting a look at Monahan in Ottawa, would make the short drive to see Gatineau the next night, etc.

Yeah, about a month ago Tanguay burned through 3 Flames players, humiliated Russel with a wide move, dragged Ramo out of the net, and scored the go-ahead goal against the Flames.

He's still good.

Yeah, I read that too. It was also rumoured that Montreal was going to take him but things like that are pretty common when you are trying to justify your pick. Not that Poirier needs justifying, he looks like a fine pick to me, he's a RW too but I always want a defenceman.

The best French Canadian Flame ever might just have been Guy Chouinard. But can we count guys who sound like they were French Canadian? Then it's Theoron Fleury or Jean Gaudreau.
