What even is our worst contract? It has to be either Smid, Raymond, or Engelland

I would say Raymond because he is a forward and we have guys ready to step in. At least Smid/Engelland play with an edge

Moving Richards to a 3rd line role in 2-3 years isn't a bad deal. Stajan will more than likely be gone by then assuming Bennett, Monahan and Backlund are still here.

Sure his contract is bad, but at 29 years old I have a very hard time believing he is over the hill.

LA has played a lot of hockey the past 3 years. When I watch Richards he looks like a player that has played a lot of hockey. He looks beat up.

I think a lot of people still think of the Mike Richards of a few years back. He hasn't been that player for a while and is a shadow of the guy that used to play for the Flyers. Think of why the Kings put him on waivers. It's because he's simply not effective. He would quickly become the biggest whipping boy this site has seen since Chris Butler.

Is he MUCH better than Stajan anymore nevermind worth 5.75M cap hit until 2020? I think not.

I have only one question

First, let's pretend that the Flames really are involved in trade talks for Mike Richards. Let's also pretend that the trigger is pulled and he ends up with the Flames.

How long until Jeff Carter follows him to Calgary?

No thanks to Richards and that hideous contract. Yuck.

The other thing is the Flames will need to stay above the cap floor. Our younger players are a few years away from getting bigger contracts, and going by what Brodie was resigned for, they won't get $7 million dollar deals. If the cap goes up, the contract wouldn't be so bad.

Just don't think he's as bad as people think he is. Sure, he's playing terrible hockey and looks like a shell of his former self, but that is probably what you get from the type of hockey LA has played the past few years. Brown and Kopitar look beat up too. Only a guy like Doughty, who is younger, looks like he still has something left in the tank right now.

ComixZone is on to something, I think. I could see a trade at 10:05 tomorrow, going to Toronto or Calgary. We have a contract in Raymond (who is a good player, but not a fit for this team) that could be moved with Smid (for example), for Richards and an AHL player to balance salaries. LA throws in a high pick, and takes on pieces that they can use.

Keep in mind that Richards can play RW as well. He is an older, slightly beat up Jooris, and can switch between C and RW with Jooris, as the need arises.

Enough of a sweetener, and a spot opening up for Wotherspoon, and this isn't a horrible trade scenario. I would see it more as Richards taking Jones's spot on next years roster.

Personally, I think he is MUCH better than Stajan. He knows what it takes to win, he has leadership skills and he's experienced winning the cup. Stajan is a good guy and a decent player but he doesn't strike me as a leader and he's never really won anything. Richards' contract may be long but it's not like he'd be 40 when it's finished.

All I"m saying is that for free, I'd take him. If we could make a deal where we were actually compensated to take him it would be even better. I wouldn't be mad if/when he becomes a Flame.

Not to mention the Flames or any other Western Conference team taking on Richards contract would be doing a massive service for the Kings a team the Flames and various other teams are in competition for a playoff spot. Zero chance be get's claimed by a Western Team outside of maybe the Oilers who don't have the space. If I'm managing the Flames I love what is happening here as if the Kings have to buy him out they are going to have long term cap ramifications.

No, but he's not what he used to be. He's a 3rd line center making almost 6 million until 2020, can't have that in the cap world.

Wow shocked so many people believe he will be claimed via Waivers.

There are so few teams that have the cap space to make a claim.

Will be interesting to see if anything happens.

My prediction, he is not claimed.

Sorry guys this is my fault. I was playing NHL 15 the other day and Richards ended up on the Flames on my BAP. We ended up winning a cup in his second year (my pro's third) so there is that.

Didn't see this in the thread. Apologies if it has already been posted

@JSportsnet: Told that neither Leafs nor Flames have interest in Mike Richards. Big ticket and long term scaring people off.

Yep as I said zero chance Western Conference teams will do the Kings a massive favor here. It's the kind of transaction that could get a GM fired unless you are the Oilers to which you get a promotion for wrecking your team.

What happens when Bennett makes the team? Richards at 5.75m per season is a 3rd line Center for a couple of seasons.

Then later on he is a 4th line Center at 5.75m per season

yikes

LA is up against the cap and don't want to take bad contracts back. It's not that they don't like him, they don't have room for him. They need an upgrade on D to replace Voynov.

Wish people would realize that.

I'm guessing that many are voting without having a look at the cap hit and remaining term...
