Are there not still rules for the order in which teams can put in a claim? Or who has first crack? I see suggestions for Calgary, Winnipeg, etc but don't the 14 or so teams beneath us have the first opportunity?

Why would Edmonton want that Contract?

I am willing to wager he doesn't get claimed.

We have cap space now.

What happens when Monahan wants $6M+ in a few years? Gaudreau? Giordano will want $8M+.

When it comes time to compete, Richards and his massive contract will make it harder to sign the pieces that actually matter to this rebuild.

Don't be fooled and think in the moment.
The cap will go up with time, and if he has 2 years left buy him out at that time.

I really have to think the Oilers take him though. They have to.

I'll take Richards... But we'd have to move Stajan.

For those wondering, he carries a $5.75M cap hit for the next 4 years (through the 2018-2019 season).

Actual cash owed starting next season is $6.0M, $5.5M, $4.5M, $3.0M.

Edit: I'm wrong, it's 5 more years at $5.75.

The cap goes up with time yet Cup contenders are always up against the Cap.

Being smart with their contracts is what allowed them to compete in the first place. There's a reason why he's going on waivers.

5.75 cap hit to 2019, no thanks.

Can Edmonton even fit that salary under the cap?

I miss Cap Geek.

I don't want any part of Mike Richards. I have thought of him as one of the most over rated/over paid players in the NHL for years now. Pass.

If Edmonton doesn't claim him then I think he passes.

It's 5 years beyond this season.

Good player... just needs a change of scenery. I'd prefer not Calgary, but I can see him doing well even in Toronto etc. Problem is, they have no space for him, I'm sure.

I think calgary should be able to get a pick or prospect of some sort to take richards, should he go unclaimed.
That's a deal i would be very interested in.

Oilers don't have an abundance of cap room so I would think they may pass and hope their fortunes change via the draft. The fact that they couldn't trade him makes it sound likely he will pass through waivers.

They have the cap space and desperately need a center.
Can't see how Edmonton could not claim him.
But then again...it is Edmonton

Since they couldn't work out a trade for him, I'm thinking he'll go unclaimed.

For teams to take on that contract, I'd think they'd rather send a contract back or force LA to retain salary - he may get traded yet.

Seems like strange timing by the Kings, more movement afoot?

I would take him in a heart beat.
Where would he fit into our long term plans? We already have an overpaid 4th line C who more than satisfies the mentor aspect. If anything I would rather trade Stajan for him as opposed to picking him up off waivers straight up.

I'd love to have Richards but not at that price. Our guys are going to need raises soon and that contract will bite us in the ass, guaranteed. Feel bad for Richards though. Goes from signing what he thought was a lifetime contract with Philly, to winning 2 Cups with LA, to now probably going to the armpit of the NHL for the rest of his contract. He must be terrified right now how his life is about to turn upside down.

Eklund says they are looking for a defenceman.
