I think Hartley has settled on Hiller over Ramo. Ramo has played well but he's also had some injury problems while here, which have slowed him down. He should be worth something if traded as he would make a fine back up.

I haven't done the math to back this up... but I actually think Ramo has been a poor back up but a decent starter. I think his best games have come when he has seen a lot of action. When he plays once a week or less, he doesn't have as good of games.

Well yeah, but don't tell our potential trading partners that.

Given the choice i think i would keep and try and resign Ramo. Hiller's recent history has shown me that he is maybe weak mentally as he seems to thrive in a situation where he is competing for starts and can be world class if he is pushed. The problem is it seems when he is given the ball to run with it he falls down and has been displaced first in Anahiem and now Calgary in my opinion as he seems to struggle when he is comfortable. With a rebuilding team i think it is important to have more consistancy.
Ramo i think is the opposite and seems to get better and better the more starts he gets but has struggled with injuries. I still take him over Hiller though given the choice.

Why can't Ortio push Hiller?

Just look at the contracts. Decisions have already been made.
Hiller for 3 years
Ramo UFA
Ortio 1-way next season.
The polls are closed. They trade Ramo at the deadline, or they lose him to free agency, because next year it's Ortio and Hiller.

I am all for moving a goalie right about now. Move Hiller, resign Ramo and have Gilles in the AHL next year.

Do you really want a guy who can only perform when he is being pushed?

Doesn't anyone see the issue where Edmonton doesn't have a proven #1 starter? Hiller is a proven NHL starter. He isn't Henrik Lundqvist, no doubt, but he can haul the mail if need be. No one knows for sure if Ramo can, and it isn't worth the risk IMO. Hiller isn't breaking the bank, and we don't have any cap issues. I will say if it wasn't for Hiller's exceptional play at the beginning of the season we wouldn't be far off Edmonton's pace.
Ramo should without a doubt should be the trade bait.

The thing is though that if Ortio is to stay...it is as the starter. You dont want him in Calgary as the back-up at this point if he can be in Addy starting and playing a ton. Thats all part of the development.
So either he starts in Calgary, in which case you trade Hiller, or he starts in Adirondack in which case you make no moves in net right now at all.

Hiller signed for 2 years...not 3.
Which IMO makes him a much more valuable trading piece.

Sounds like an Ortio recall might not be so immediate after the All-Star Break

@Fan960Pinder: Conroy on Ortio going down to Adirondack: He's kinda had his run and we need to get Ramo and Hiller going.

Best signal if Ortio is coming right back is if he doesn't play this weekend. No reason to have the guy play this weekend in Addy if he's coming right back. Let him rest like the rest of them. If he's not going to be back, then play him and he can get time off over the AHL break.
Going from different leagues with different caliber shooters isn't easy.

Ortio looks like our best goalie. He should be playing if we're serious about the playoffs.

It appears that Ortio, Granlund and Wotherspoon haven't made it to Adirondack (technically Rochester as they play there tonight) as all 3 are scratched tonight for "travel".
*insert own conclusions here*

Conroy said they wouldn't make it in his interview today.
