Good points. There goes my theory.

I'm guessing most goalies aren't fans of actually playing in the all-star game. Nothing like getting lit up in a glorified game of shinny with no defence...

Figured he punched his ticket back to the AHL with last nights game. Gotta think Ramo is the odd guy out the way contracts are structured. I also wouldn't be shocked to see some trades take place over the weekend as the league breaks and GM's get to work

Wouldn't say that Ortio was all that poor last night, so perhaps the Flames want to give him a longer look?

Didn't see the 1st Ducks goal, but the 2nd and 3rd goals were both tips that Ortio had no chance on. The 4th goal he probably could have had though.

They tip ins weren't bad goals. But they were not "no chance" goals either. He saved a couple of those the other games.

He had a mediocre outing, which is fine. The choice is whether to let him try again, at the expense of a roster squeeze and against Hartley's practice preferences, or to send him down at the risk of making it seem like a punishment.

Ortio, I like, do not get me wrong. However he isn't ready to carry an NHL team, you can't rush these things.

Ramo has played well, and IMO that makes him a very tradeable asset to someone like Detroit or Nashville who has goaltending injury woes.
It would be preferable to keep Ramo over Hiller IMO. Ramo is just as likely to get hot as Hiller and has better up side, again in my opinion. It's close though, and assuming Ramo can be re-signed, the club moves whichever one can fetch a better return.

Hiller or Ramo are in very different contract situations, points in their career and have different experience and reputation. So which is more tradeable really depends on the partner. Ramo is an inexerienced rental, so a team will see him as a backup at best, and only a depth player. He's a 3rd round pick value at best. Hiller is a starter on a few teams, but probably more like an experienced backup who you wouldn't be afraid to go to. He's got a year left, so not a rental.

Trades are always exciting, so part of me wants to think there's something in the works, but could this be the Flames giving Ortio a "performance bonus" in the form of another week of NHL pay?

That first goal was a complete defensive breakdown that niether Ortio, or any other goaltender in the world would have stopped barring total robbery. Belesky was basically allowed to set up behind the net with no one meeting him, and then pass it right in front of and across the crease for a wide open net. You'd think that was Joe Thornton setting up the assist on a power play the way that play went down.

If they trade a goalie, I'd like a youngish goalie or defenceman in return.

Washington, and Tampa Bay may look to get a goalie to give their starter a rest down the stretch.
Washington would be a decent idea actually. Holtby started 26 straight games or something like that and Peters has been terrible so far for them. If Treliving somehow found a way to ship off Ramo or Hiller in a deal for, say, Karl Alzner, that would be perfect.

I guess he just declined to play in the ASG?

Hopefully he will be in net this weekend.

There is no chance Ramo would net Alzner in return. Washington does not need a $5 million goalie (Hiller) to back up Holtby.

I never suggested a one-for-one deal

I would love to pry Bowey from them... Flames would be adding, but it'd be worth it.

Flames can easily retain salary on Hiller, at 50% retained he is at 2.25M/year for another year. I would even argue that we benefit from retaining since that gives us more flexibility to drop underpreforming vets without worrying about the cap floor. That's not to say that Wash would trade Alzner for Hiller but Hiller should have decent value.

Ramo has less than 100 NHL games under his belt. Hiller over 300. Hiller also has a better save percentage, and GAA. I really don't get why people want to keep Ramo over Hiller.

Doesn't anyone see the issue where Edmonton doesn't have a proven #1 starter? Hiller is a proven NHL starter. He isn't Henrik Lundqvist, no doubt, but he can haul the mail if need be. No one knows for sure if Ramo can, and it isn't worth the risk IMO. Hiller isn't breaking the bank, and we don't have any cap issues. I will say if it wasn't for Hiller's exceptional play at the beginning of the season we wouldn't be far off Edmonton's pace.

Ramo should without a doubt should be the trade bait.

I really think "Ramo or Hiller - Who should the Flames retain for next season?" should be a poll. Would make (and has already made) some interesting discussion, and I would really be curious to see the outcome of that poll.
