No 8 year old would think of writing down how many screens you had to go in each direction in order to get to water. That is probably the only way of figuring it out.

Just played through Star Trek: 25th Anniversary on DOSbox, is Judgement Rites available on this does anyone know?

I remember Hugo's House of Horrors too.. Going to the mall and bugging my parents for a few dollars to buy shareware disks from little mall kiosks.

Turns out it is. I just learned that the Internet Archive holds a DMCA exemption for this software on historical preservation grounds.

Same here (well, I'm 25). But I remember playing a lot of these games, like Gorillas.bas, side-scrolling Duke Nukem, and Lemmings. Was a long time ago!

Makes me wonder how far gaming will come by the time my son is 25...

Back then I think you got disks full of free side scrolling games. Keen and others were fun as well.

Wow. I seem to remember the graphics as better than they actually were. Damn you Thexder!

On another note, I was looking back at some old programs and loved how there were not special installation procedures. You just copied the files and everything worked. Then when you were done, you just deleted the files.

Same. TI 99/4A with cassette save/load. I remember countless hours of searching for that damn O I had turned into 0 (or vice versa). And then after finally figuring out all the errors you made in copying the program you got to play just a terrible game for the half hour before you got sick of it.

And then I'd fire up Tunnels of Doom for an afternoon of Wyvern slaying

That's what I hate about nostalgia. What's that saying? "You can never go home again?" Feels like it applies when I try playing these old games again.

I love finding classic games that I haven't played before though, that's always fun.
