I wasted a lot of hours on some of these games.

(Mild NSFW on some searches, as it includes some 8-bit and even text based porn games.)

I went and watched a bunch of walkthroughs for most of these games on Youtube. Kings Quest in particular frustrated me for hours back in the day.

Especially on V. I spent hours wandering around the desert trying to figure out how not to die.

^Remember "MEMMAKER" in DOS 6? Sometimes it would be the reason a game would work, other times it needed to be disabled before running a game.

I remember back in the day Lemmings was popular. It came on a little blue floppy disk with a white glossy Lemmings label. I tried like mad to pirate that stupid disk, but there were some strange folders on the disk that made it impossible to successfully copy, and the disk used these folders as a means of copy protection.

lol, wow. Some of you are old school. My first real entry into the gaming world was Duke Nukem. Playing a lan game blew my mind. That really got me hooked. Things really took off when I came across a little number called Counter Strike.

^ Pfft, kids. We had the Microsoft QBasic IDE. We'd load up Nibbles.bas and go to town. Or Gorillas.bas. That was some cutting edge stuff back then. Running on a 286 with 4 MB of RAM, a hard drive the size of a brick with the storage capacity about the size of an Iomega ZIP disk (100 MB) with similar read/write performance.

I still have the disks for one of the first games I ever played; Silpheed. It's on the list so I'll have to give it a shot.

I am assuming this is Duke Nukem 3D. I use to play the side scrolling Duke games on DOS. Those were some hard games...

The best part of Gorillas was editing the files to change how gravity worked. As computers got faster and faster, there was a timing variable that had to be edited with ever larger numbers to allow the game to run properly. Otherwise, your snake went off the map at 300kph (300khz?).

Also, my grade 9 computer class was basically QBasic programming. I didn't do a single assignment, but still got an A after writing a blackjack program that spread to nearly every PC in the lab. My teacher figured if I could do that, then I obviously understood how to make Basic add 2 + 3.

Also, remember when we got brand new computers with the brand new Windows 95 OS. I don't know how much time our teacher had to spend after the first day re-setting everything after we completely mucked up every setting one could find.

My first computer games were typed from a library book using a Texas Instrument TI-99. There wasn't even a tape drive to save them.

I'm sure this archive will bring back old memories. I look forward to checking it out.

I suspect most are abandonware at this point. Though I was surprised to see a few Nintendo licensed titles there.

I'm only 26 and I clearly remember playing a lot of the DOS games back in the day. Insane how fast the gaming world has improved in the last 15 years.

There were a lot of different sites that let you play some of the old games like Kings Quest, but you had to start halfway through due to some kind of licensing restriction.

I recall never making it past the desert or the witch's forest. I might have to watch some walkthroughs and play this again to avenge my 8 year old self.
