This is definitely a move to address the upcoming California road trip against the big bad pacific teams with important points on the line, after seeing how we were physically outmatched the last time through. Now having Colborne and Shore in should provide a boost in the physical area. I don't think Bouma on that line is a fluke, either. They want to head out on the trip with a big, gritty line that can outmatch the opposition's that they can throw out there when they need to.

I really don't think this move was made for an upcoming road trip. It has long term all over it. You hit the right points that it's about being bigger and matching up against the bigger teams but this upcoming roadtrip will see the least effects of picking up Shore.

This is kind of out of left field, but I think we should try converting Colborne to D. With his mobility and hands, I think he could immediately be a second pairing guy. He's bigger than any defenseman we have, either on the team or in the system besides Kanzig.
Thoughts?

Of course there are long term implications, but I mean the Timing probably has some relation to the upcoming batch of games. I mean knowing that their intention was to call him up anyways, they probably felt it best to do now.

What a great story to see Lance Bouma moving from bottom three to bottom six. Two points shy of his career best in points in a season, and a real up and down the ice contributor.
We talk a lot about future core players, but Bouma is a huge part of the dressing room and "feel" of the Flames.

That's really hard to do isn't it? Are there any successful NHL examples of that? Byfuglien is the only guy I think of, but I'm pretty sure he went D -> RW -> D didn't he?
It's great in theory but there's way too much positional play that would be required isn't there?

Sadly by the time this team comes together Lance Bouma will end up having to retire or a shadow of his former self. Love the way he plays, all the balls go to all the walls but that style of play has a short shelf life.

No. I don't think he ever played the position and it's a lot more technical than fwd. I have no clue how well he skates backwards.
Quite a few d-men coverted to fwd (Buf). I always thought they should try Housely at centre.
Burns is the only guy I know who made a good transition the other way. A few goons have been used that way but I don't know why (McSorely).

It's possible. Some players are able to switch back and forth. I did it when I was younger growing up playing. Not sure about an NHLer unless he has experience doing that just so he knows where to be positionally and what to watch out for.

You get more opportunities to hit people on D and it was good to have a tough guy stand in front of your goalie and hack guys down in they came close.

That is a really good description, actually.
It's too bad Rhett's career ended so early, but his style of play made it so. He's better as a player than he is as a radio personality; can't stand Rhett on 960 in the morning, but I digress.

I like Rhett, both on the ice and off.
