If we're arguing that we could move Shore to RW to address an organizational need in Calgary, why didn't Florida do this instead of trading him if he's that NHL-ready? Surely, they could have made room for him in their bottom 6 RW position?

And if not this season, maybe by next season?

Boyes, Hayes, Fleischmann & Upshall were all ahead of him on RW. Plenty of good Cs as well.

But the Flames have also done a better job of picking up players like Russell, Colbourne and now Shore. These guys are almost fully developed and stuck in the AHL due to another team's organizational depth. The Flames picked these guys up for next to nothing nothing and it is the little moves like this that have also accelerated our rebuild.

But the Oilers are better at picking 1st overall... so at least they have that going for them, which is nice.

They are good at GETTING a the 1st overall pick. They are actually very NO GOOD at picking 1st overall.

Tough to say who approached who; wouldn't surprise me if our guys made an astute observation based on Florida's organizational depth.. seems more likely that we came requesting Shore than the Panthers seeking out Knight (source: non existent).

I have little doubt there will be more shuffling through the remainder of this season/the summer. The fact we are legitimately curb stomping Edmonton's re-pre-threebuild makes this that much more exciting to me.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Panthers package up Knight as part of another deal later.

Sending him to Edmonton would be more liquidy. Nothing a bit of imodium can't fix.

Why wouldn't they have just done that with Shore, who appears to be a much better prospect?

They may be assessing prospects much as we are. Shore can't come up to the bigs without sticking as they will lose him on waivers.

That'd be pretty cool if we got his brother from LA as well.

  • he is a NHLer.
  • only reason he is in AHL the previous CBA it stipulated that you could only play 69 NHL games with waiver exemption
  • had he been called up he would have played the remaining 2 games and wouldn't have cleared waivers to be sent back down
  • to Shore's credit, he was aware of the situation (being stuck in the AHL) and still worked his tail off
  • was and still is on the verge of a breakout season offensively
  • over the last couple of months his 2 way game was exceptional
  • his defensive game really improved under Coach Rowe
  • will be a nice fit for Calgary
  • he won't be a Gaudreau exciting type player - that is not his level
  • he is going to be a really good NHL player
  • Panthers were already setup down the middle with Bjugstad, Barkov, Bolland and MacKenzie before the season started
  • that left guys like Shore and Trochek on the outside looking in
  • with the depth down the center many people viewed Shore as a trade chip
  • Panther fans were hoping that Shore would have been traded for a full time NHL player
  • kudos to Tallon to giving Drew a chance to play in the NHL
  • 3rd season as a pro, going to turn 24 at the end of the month
  • his defensive game has come to the point he is trusted to play on the PK (wasn't trusted to play on the PK in his first or 2nd year)
  • his vision on the ice is exceptional
  • he has an above average shot but he doesn't shoot enough - something that they will want him to work on
  • given his situation and that he didn't go with a "woe is me attitude" reflects upon his maturity
  • really loved in the lockeroom - great teammate
  • he is best as a center
  • still needs work in faceoffs
  • Panthers tried him last year as a RW in training camp and a few preseason games
  • thought he had success as a RW and that the Panthers would keep him there
  • but Panthers decided to shift him back to center
  • he has played C this entire year
  • would be shocked if he didn't play C right now - but that may depend on the teams needs
  • he is not a small kid
  • can line up with bigger centers and can throw his weight around
  • he is not going to drop the gloves
  • can play the 3rd/4th line roles - playing with physicality and energy
  • that is why he is a pretty unique player - he doesn't need to be in the top 6 role to thrive
  • I don't expect him to jump into a top 6 role right away
  • he does have the skillset and hockeyiq to move into a top 6 role
  • Calgary is getting a good player. They are getting a solid NHL player and they will be happy with what they recieve

on Adirondack:
  • Adirondack is a very good hockey team
  • the game they played against the Rampage was arguably one of their best this season
  • the transition game is really something really to marvel
  • been really impressed with Hanowski and Arnold - think they are going to be special players, offensive talent is impressive
  • 2 years ago Ortio was lost at times, last year he was an entirely different player - dominant goaltender
  • Adirondack is built for the playoffs - got the goaltending and offense
  • got some deficiences on the backend like a lot of AHL teams

Special? Offensive?

I wonder if this is a pbp guy that is judging another organization's prospects by just one game live without the research.

Calgary essentially turned a 4th round pick into Shore. They may be able to continue to swap upwards, since Shore seems like usueful guy, even if there isn't a long term spot here. If he really wants NHL time, I'd think he'd give RW a real good effort.

They have both shown flashes of offensive skill, not top 6 skill, but skill none the less. They might develop into quality 3rd line guys down the road. They have been two of the most improved guys, but neither is going to wow you like Sven/Poirier could.

Arnold has a bunch of points this year, so it's not as farfetched as you might think. Look, Byron would be a star in the AHL, so its all to be taken with a grain of salt. I think the AHL higlights offensive abilities because the defences aernt very structured (or so I've been told). Kolanos killed the AHL, but wasn't NHL calibre.

^ Exactly

If you have any NHL caliber offensive talents, you'll generate points like crazy down there because most defenses are terrible. Arnold and Hanowski have shown that at times, but not consistently. That's most of the difference between guys that have top 6 upside (Poirier) and those that are looking like quality bottom 6ers. Poirier is consistently dangerous.

Age also matters. Anyone over 25 should be a good scorer or is just a roster plug.

For what it's worth, Tony Gallagher of The Province thought the trade of Knight for Shore was a nice move by Calgary (and was wondering why Canucks GM Jim Benning didn't pull the trigger on a trade).

Then again, perhaps the malaise extends to Canuck management as well. You would have to wonder where they were on the Drew Short deal when the Panthers gave up the big young righthanded centre for just Corban Knight due to the fact they have so many good, healthy centres these days. Panthers GM Dale Tallon had nothing but good things to say about the 2009 draft and he appears to be pretty much exactly what Vancouver could use right now.

The Flames were walking on air with the deal Saturday night but apparently the Canucks were less enthused, despite the long term black hole which exists up the middle behind Henrik Sedin and Bo Horvat when another solid prospect would appear to have been just what the doctor ordered.
