as he should and must. the leafs team this year is basically the same as last year. Defensively they are a complete wreck. They give up tons of shots and grade A opportunities. They are able to win as they have can score a ton of goals, but should a game be tight or they don't get highlight reel goaltending they lose.

the media has been calling out carlyle and the leafs for sloppy wins since last year, especially due to the missing of the playoffs last year after a great start. If he didn't express concerns with the way the team has played this year, the media would rightfully make a mockery of him, but more importantly, the team would go no where again this season.

what i don't understand is how a defensive guy like carlyle, who won a cup built on defense play such a sloppy game? Maybe carlyle is indeed very much overrated, and the solid cup winning team he coached was more a function of having 2 hall of fame defenceman on the team than his coaching and team style of play.

Wow that's just over the top. I can't believe Air Canada would condone that. Just goes to show the fishbowl the players are subjected to.

The Kessel problem is kind of circular.

The Leafs have bad D. They need to score a lot to win. So Kessel is given free reign to score a lot (albeit always a minus as well). Kessel would be better and maybe more useful if he contributed defensively as well. But now not only has he been conditioned not to play that way, he actively refuses to change (see what Spott said and the talk of him refusing to switch wings).

Kessel's supporters always point to his point totals. But while he is obviously really good offensively, maybe his stats are as high as they are every year because he has been the only real scorer on a bad team, which tends to mean more ice time, all the PP time, etc. Like Maruk back in the day.

There's nothing circular about being one-dimensional

How many times does that have to happen before these guys who run corporate twitter accounts just completely stop tweeting on personal accounts unless they're on a dedicated computer?

Not only will the leafs be forced to keep Kessel for his whole contract, they won't be able to really afford any real help for him for a while either.

The leafs are where the Flames were a few years ago.

Phil Kessel's table hockey line from centre to the offensive zone hashmarks?

It goes forwards really well, but I think it needs some WD-40 on the back-track.

In theory coaching Phaneuf should be easy. You just put a cupcake on the ice where you want him positioned. He skates to the cupcake to eat it. Eventually you replace the cupcake with a circle. If he skates to the circle, he gets a cupcake as a reward. Eventually you replace the circle with a player in a position he needs to defend. If he goes to the player, he gets a cupcake. If he does it in a game, he gets a box of cupcakes. As a bonus he will eventually forget he has a well-paying contract and will literally play for cupcakes.

As for Kessel, you just need to tie a cupcake on string to another person and have him skate around after it until loses a few pounds. If you can familiarize him with playing on the left wing while you're at it, so much the better.

Nonis is a dud. He stinks without his papa around to make the tough decisions.

Leafs deserve this for not letting Burke see out his 5 year plan.

Kessel would do well in San Jose or Columbus. He needs to be a 2nd line sniper, that plays protected minutes, who gets PP time and plays in a US market where the attention is less intense.

What worthless sack of meat.

Here's hoping The Maple Leafs continue to manage their team the same way they always have.

I think Kessel is horrible, but by calling him one dimensional, you are insinuating he is a line on the ice with no width or depth. He wouldn't even be able to comprehend three dimensional beings as they couldn't exist in his universe..... Anyway.

Wow, just heard Carlyle's story of how he was fired. They wanted him to drive 3 hours in a snowstorm (he was attending his dying brother's bedside) for a "meeting". He knew what was up and said no.
