For those in the industry, I appreciate your insight.

Edit: nevermind...a quick google search shows this is far from true. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/tr...n-history.html
Another point to that article that is sadly not being mentioned is the sheer volume of flights today compared to 10 years ago, 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago..

They should compare the number of flights to crashes, create a ratio graphs based on this and that graph would be stunning to see.

Flying on AirAsia tomorrow, as I have at least 30 times over the past few years. Can't say I'm thrilled to be going on this flight.

Well you can't really account for a SAM with a 70000 foot ceiling in maintenance and safety checks.

You're saying they don't test the flare/chaff systems prior to takeoff on AirAsia? No wonder people don't feel safe on their flights.

I don't get the reference, AirAsia has never been shot down with a SAM. Air Malaysia is the airline that was shot down.

My assumption is that flameswin was talking about people thinking Malaysian Airlines was safe after their first crash. Perhaps I was wrong, but I was commenting in the train of thought of that assumption.

The better assumption with flameswin is that he's never fully sure what he's saying and just kind of says stuff.

Don't crucify yourself man, fate is a weird thing and although I don't even believe in it I think people should use to get past their fears.

Get on that plane and I give you my word you'll be fine

You'll either die, which won't matter cause you'll be dead, or you'll live.

Why stress?

The tail has been found, this may help them narrow the search for the black boxes.

Because dying usually involves lots of pain.

Isn't the role of the black box to use it to find the wreckage, not the other way around?

Not really. The boxes have a locator signal so that they can be found easier. Especially if there is a large debris field. (Mid-air break up for example.) And by finding the black boxes they can also help the searchers find the wreckage.

However the main point of the black boxes is to determine the cause of the crash.

So with all this talk about how planes go still go "missing" in this day and age here is a timely article that just came out about Northern operator First Air and their use of the FLYHT system that makes them the only airline in the world right now with this capability:

It always involves death, hence the stress for worriers.
