I had BB100 for a while, never getting more than around 85 Mbps, and mostly getting around 5 Mbps or less. I was constantly having to reset the router to try and get any throughput.
Switched to Telus Fibre and it's phenomenal. Same pricing that BB100 was, but constant 105 Mbps speeds. It's unbelievably better.

I have BB100 as well, I feel lucky if I get a few seconds of 2mbps.
A Telus guy came knocking on my door and explained to me that Shaw bottlenecks or throttles everyone to the same connection on my street. I thought he was full of crap at the time but... maybe he was telling the truth

That's exactly what I was experiencing. I was furious. So when the Telus guy came knocking, I was all over it.

Forget the big 3, even their discount carriers are pretty expensive. You'll be paying close to $60 for less than a gig of data. A few years ago $70 got you 6 gigs.
|
This is exactly why I'll never do a subsidized phone upgrade again. By buying my phone outright I can keep my unlimited long distance until 2022, keep my 6 G of data per month and keep my plan price at $70.

I dunno I think theres some fishy #### going on on the Reddits atm.

I don't see anything about rolling back existing customers either, but if you want to keep your grandfathered plan, I hope you won't need to make any changes or move after January 6th.

This is my understanding of the change, (if I have it wrong, please let me know):
Let's say you are currently on a $60/25MB plan, it's going up to $67 Jan 5th. That is happening to all, the price is not grandfathered.
But for only $3 MORE increase ($70), now you can get to the new $70/30MB being introduced. That's in the profit incentive they are trying induce you towards, for a bit of a max speed bump (from 25 to 30MB). (edit: This is also the point where new customers wanting medium speeds will now enter, because the $67/25MB option is "grandfathered".)
Now, if you don't like the price increase, you can downgrade your speed to the next lower level (15MB), which now cost the same $60 you used to pay. That's the speed decrease, it kicks in if you want to keep your rate the same.

Yes, the price for existing customers goes up no matter what. But your speed will remain as is unless you contact Shaw to change your plan. And if you do contact Shaw, you choose the plan you want, whether that's faster or slower or more or less expensive. Not to mention that the prices for the new plans have not been announced.

If you don't contact Shaw, your speed remains unchanged and is subject to the new pricing.

Thankfully I haven't changed my cable in 4 years (got some sweet old-school packages, very few channels I never watch), and haven't changed internet since BB100 was introduced.
Why would it change if I moved? When I purchased my home 18 months ago, I kept the same internet/cable bundle.
As far as speeds go, I must be in a good neighbourhood. I hit 104/105 down quite often.

I'm glad I can keep my current plan...no issues whatsoever with speeds on the download or upload side. Even with the fairly regular netflix usage we're getting nowhere near the caps. (The first two months in the image are because my brother was living with me and downloading absolutely everything.)

I think unless you're in a new area with new Telus fiber stuff you'll be kinda hit or miss.
Didn't netflix release their study a few months ago saying Shaw was one of the better options for internet speeds over telus?

I just talked to a Shaw rep, as my net speeds have dropped to 2mbps from 50mbps. I mentioned this news and he said that 100% this statement is false. There is no actual adjustment to rates or speeds coming. Someone outside of the company made the statement.

Shaw community site says differently, doc posted has rate change. Price, what package mapped, ect. Is Unknown, and I don't think they know either. I have a feeling they are making this up as they go along since the original leaks caused so much bad press.
Also I wouldn't trust there support, last time I had to go through sales to get modem put back in bridge mode. Couldn't get any competent support from phone or twitter.

Sounds like Shaw staff don't even know what the hell their company is doing.
Well that is wrong. Even on shaw.ca the top of the site says:
"Internet pricing changes effective January 1, 2015. Learn more"
which links here:

Anyone get good Telus deals out there for Calgary? (Don't feel like cruising RFD for hours)
I'm paying $150 for Shaw TV/Internet/Phone, and I really want to get it down below $100. Even the CSR could only "help" my bill by removing $10 Long distance that I was paying for. Whoopee

So what's better than Shaw? When I switched from Telus to Windmobile with my phone I was incredibly happy, had enough of Shaw's unreasonably high bills.

How do you handle changing from one internet service provider to another when it comes to having to change your email address for all the different accounts a person has created over the years? I guess you need to have some kind of overlap where you've got both providers so you can access confirmation emails on both or something?

That's the thing, they don't usually call you for overages unless you go over a lot in three consecutive months. That's the only time I did that when I was backing up everything to the cloud and another time when I had to pull everything back down.
