didnt really follow all the characters that well, maybe it would have helped knowing some background, but.... others said they didn't in this threaddand still loved it...shrug

I understand not liking it. It was a fun watch but there were quite a few moments that I could see someone just not buying at all, Drax was iffy, the ending battle was a little ridiculous and how Starlord is so cocky without experiencing backlash by his adversaries while in their captivity was silly. A fun movie but far from a masterpiece especially if you were expecting something more straight forward like the Avengers.

After missing this in the theatres, I finally got around to watching it. I thought I would like it. I did not expect to like it as much as I did. I don't really have much of an interest in its comic-book legacy or its tie-in with other Marvel franchises. For me, this was simply space opera at its best. And arguably the best space opera since Fifth Element (and the movie that for me, this had the most in common with). From the great design and rich visuals of the film, to the goofy humour, to the rich characters in both central and minor roles. I have a hard time finding things that I didn't like in it. There was really nothing that original in the plot and the pursuit of the universe-destroying MacGuffin, but the plot really was as much as it needed to be. Not every joke landed, but the best humour came from Drax, Rocket, and Groot, and worked largely because all three of them took themselves very seriously for different reasons. And the humour that was based on conventions of the genre worked particularly well (such as "like a bunch of jackasses, standing in a circle"... my favorite line in the movie). For me, this was a lot less like other Marvel movies (which have been hit and miss for me), and instead seemed to borrow from some of my favorite comic book movies, using pop music in an often ironic way similar to Watchmen, or a colour-palette that reminded me of the Hellboy movies.

That line when they're standing in the circle is the line that always stands out for me, because Rocket deep down is so full of self loathing and uncertainty that it becomes the ultimate bluster line for me.

Agreed. I watched it and I have no knowledge or caring of the comic books and just thought to myself: 'This is a fun movie.'

Same here. My kids follow all the Marvel stuff but they liked this and insisted I watch. Glad I did.

Listened to the director's commentary and while not nearly as much of the lines were ad-libbed as I'd have thought the standing in a circle line was. And by the actor that was playing rocket on set, not Bradley Cooper.

This and The Edge of Tomorrow are the best summer flicks to me this year. Both are very fun movies that don't take themselves too seriously.

But yeah, Edge of Tomorrow is right up there with the top ones.
With The Hunger Games movie doing poorly I think Guardians of the Galaxy was the box office champ of the year.

Those 2 movies turned out great!
The issue with X-men is that it had waaaaayyyyy too much Jennifer Lawrence. The movie should not have been so much about her role. And it got silly, like how the computer chips were controlled... without going into too much detail for minor spoilers.

Don't forget Dawn of the Planet of the Apes! I'd put that just behind Guardians, and probably ahead of Edge of Tomorrow and X-men. It was a splendid movie, with the most well developed villain I've seen in years. The human element was a bit lacking, but that's really not what people are paying to see.

ALL ABOARD!

2014 in general has been one of the best years in recent memory for movies and I guess it hasn't really shown in the box office.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
X-Men
Lego Movie
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Edge of Tomorrow
Godzilla
I haven't seen Intersellar, Hunger Games, The Hobbit or Big Hero 6.
Of course we also got TMNT, Amazing Spiderman 2 and the new Transformers...

Solid movies but I don't see any classics there although Captain America (IMO best of that bunch on your list) and Edge of Tomorrow were pretty memorable.

Edge of Tomorrow was entertaining, but I wouldn't call it the top of the crop either. I bought the Captain America DVD and watched it a few times. Still my favourite of the summer. Followed very closely by Guardians and Apes. I remember enjoying X-men too, but not as much as the others. I'll probably have to watch it again and re-evaluate for posterity

I thought the lego movie could have been better, but I was looking for lots of vintage stuff in it and all they had was the spaceman. Definately not horrible.
