One flaw that corsi has is that there is no context for the situation for the shots.
Usually a team that gets an early lead is content to sit back a bit and try to play good defensively and allow their own offensive chances grow organically instead of activating the defense and taking risks. In situations like that, the losing team will actually win the corsi battle despite being the inferior team.
If you were to have context like say the corsi stats for when a game is tied, when up a goal, when up 2+ when down a goal and when down 2+ would make a lot more sense.
That way you could parse out which players are actually contributing when the game is on the line (tied) vs when the game is out of hand (down 2+)
Even then it's still not fully perfect, but it would a little more helpful.

Actually, there is plenty of data on that. Exactly what you are asking for.

Can't blame any of the losses on the goalies for the past 6 games really. The Flames defensive plays hasn't been that great. There's definitely less puck possession in almost every zone they're in. Basically, a lot of teams are starting to not give the Flames any room, especially for Gaudreau. Right now with all the neutral ice and just within the offensive line turnovers, the defence is backing up way too often. It's almost like watching the Flames from 2 to 3 years ago again. Even the best goalie in the world wouldn't be able to win this game tonight as a Flames.
I disagree. 4 goals on 15 shots (vs Buffalo) and 13 shots tonight is unacceptable no matter how poorly your defense plays. I can accept that Buffalo was a poor defensive game overall but that's just making excuses for Ramo.
That said, the forwards have to start scoring as well, but tonight I put the majority of the blame on Ramo.
I know there is a lot of resistance to the acceptance of "advanced stats" on CP. But I am encouraged to see people asking about it and talking about it. Even sometimes in jest.
Whoever is running CP's twitter has also gotten into the act.
I understand the resistance, but I find that using the stats to help evaluate the game doesn't make the experience worse for me, it actually makes it better. As it allows me to look at my own biases I have when I just watch the game, and I can rewatch a game with a new outlook when I realize that I wasn't seeing what was actually happening on the ice.
Anywho, I am sure most of you don't care, but I wanted to post that.
Looking at advance stats in a game of chance is is meaning less. One player would have more than the next purely on where the puck bounced. Its like a craps player tracking his rolls.
Woah woah woah pump the break pad... Scoring a goal on the power play when down 5-1 with a minute left absolutely does NOT make up for an otherwise lackadaisical effort.
There is a handful of players struggling right now forsure, but how some fans continue to defend Curtis Glencross is beyond me. He is an assistant captain on this team. He needs to lead by example and right now he's relatively invisible.
Mike Backlund scores most of his points in "garbage time", that never gets mentioned. GlenX creates and has scoring chances each and every game, he just hasn't buried them at his normal rate. But then again, it is an 82 game haul.

Wut?

Your long standing bias has seen you become an ongoing joke on this forum. It's really at the point where no one should take you seriously when you mention Backlund. People should pity you for being more concerned with trying to stubbornly save face in the light of absurd comments you've made in the past rather than legitimately contribute to discussion here.
Despite putting up a goal...Glencross has just look disinterested to me the last stretch of games. A night in the press box might do him wonders
Doubtful. Glencross is Glencross and nothing has made him take that next step so far. Don't expect it now - he's just not a great player. Good at times but not great.
This stretch doesn't really surprise me and shouldn't surprise any fan. This year wasn't going to be all peachy.

Gelinas said on the post-game that GlenX was peeved at the amount of (non) PP time he got.
Well, if he wants more, he needs to float less and grind more. The boys on 960 were whooping him up after the game, but he looked somewhat lazy to me until he scored that rocket.

One of the things that I noticed that changed around the middle of November from the early part of the season is that the forwards are getting too far up from the defense. The larger gap is leading to longer passes, and consequently more turn overs and more goals against.
Not really, they always had a ridiculous gap between defensemen and forwards. It's just that either the defensemen are making terrible passes (I'm looking at you Russell-didn't make a single pass all night) or the other team's are anticipating it and picking those passes off now. Early on it was working at moving the puck up ice quickly and creating pressure. Now it's the exact opposite.

Just for something positive in an area that has been a constant sore spot: I felt that Deryk Engelland had easily his best game as a Calgary Flame. I would like to see Potter and Engelland next game.

It may just be me but are the other teams putting more pressure on our top 4D? It seems like as soon as one of them have the puck they are feeling pressured and try to make the fancy pass which is typically being intercepted. Maybe they need to try to spin off the pressure or eat the puck a bit instead of trying a pass that is not going to work? Or instead of trying to get it up ice use your other Dman to ease the pressure some.
That being said when the Dmen do activate up ice, when it gets to the opposition's end a forward needs to drop back, way too many odd man rushes are happening. Our dmen are more skilled than the forward ranks so you want them to activate when they get a chance but make damn sure the winger pulls back to cover. Earlier on you would always see a man fall back to cover, now it seems like we are wanting to rush 4 men, will not work out well most times!

True. On the bright side I actually think these last two games were Engelland's best games.
...Now I don't know if that's Engelland actually playing well or the rest of the team playing that poorly that it makes Engelland look good, but either way...
Engelland is a solid 5-6 guy and I'm happy the Flames signed him. I don't think he's a problem or we need to upgrade him (but if we did he'd be a great 6-7). I've really become fan of his lately. The rest of the D seems to be lost lately. Selling high on Wideman right now may not be that bad of an idea...

Other teams have clearly figured out that the stretch pass was the Flames' bread and butter.

That and the defensemen joining the rush as teams are standing them up and looking for turnovers. IMO Hartley may have to start reigning Giordano and Brodie in and get them playing a more sound defensive game as it seems the more they press the worse things are getting. This team is simply not catching teams by surprise anymore as teams know how to counter the active defense.
The negativity here seems a bit overbearing. Did you truly believe the rebuild was over? That year 2 was going to lead us to the promise land?
We saw a great preview of things to come, but it was on the backs of high shooting percentages and some great puck luck. Both have dried up at the moment, but the truth likely lies somewhere between our fantastic start and our awful slide.

Last year when this happened to the team, it was expected so it wasn't that big of a deal. This year it was expected but the team started to play amazing....and then it happened. As fans, we got used to this team being amazing but the eventual losses have hit us even harder. This team is what it is, a rebuilding team in year 2 of their rebuild (real year 2, not oilers year 2 which really means a do-over on year 1). Don't be mad that they're losing, be happy that they've won and shown so much promise already.
This is still a pretty good team, they just need work.

Also could be said for every Flames team (minus last year) for the last 10 years! Always a spending cap limit team with huge potential and sprinkle in some amazing goaltending and big wins and then always mediocre results at the end of the year. Its a broken record with this team, hard to not be upset with this team as a fan for these last 10 years.
For f sakes all we are asking for is some playoff games! Top 16 out of 30 should not be this tough! Really when you take a step back and look its very sad the owners, president, GM and everyone down can't get a team into the top 16. Truly sad.
