I am pretty sure this person was beside me earlier this year. I think it is the same style of car. Her husband was trying to help her back out of a stall. My car was nearly hit 3 times before I went out of the store and moved my car down 5 spaces. She honestly spent 10 minutes trying to back out of the stall properly before i moved my vehicle. Oh, and there was only my car on one side and a walk-way on the other. It seemed like she couldn't figure out what way to turn the wheel to get the desired effect.

I can understand how turning the direction she wanted to go could right off the bat could be a little tight (especially with little awareness of the size of your vehicle), but she had a lot of options. She could have backed up and gone the opposite way she wanted, most parking lots have two ways out.

Or she could have backed up, put her back end the opposite of the way she wanted to go (essentially putting her back end in front of the red car she hit) then going back into the stall further down, which would have made the corner easy peasy to take. But it looks she was/is a bad driver with poor judgement skills and driving knowledge.

Absolutely. When you look at examples like this, and then the issue last week when seniors over 75 are complaining about mandatory re-testing, it tells me that the system isn't working.

My solution is mandatory re-testing for all drivers, every 5 or 10 years. I think the technology exists where these tests could be done electronically, in a simulator that tests a variety of driving and road conditions. Have the tests electronically scored, and if you fail, then it's no license for you until you take some driver's ed and a retest. I've been in an RCMP simulator at Depot in Regina, and it was quite realistic.

Yes, there would be a cost involved, that should be passed on to users. A driver's license isn't a right, and in order to obtain one, you should have to prove your competence, and pay the required fee. If the technology meant that the tests cost $250 a pop, so be it.

Back to the original topic, the $115 fine for this lady is a joke. Her license should be suspended immediately, pending retesting.

It's not just a BMW, it's one without parking sensors or rear view camera. You typically have to special order a stripper in this city.

The posts calling for mandatory retesting made me remember that my Grandma didn't have to take a driver's road test until she was over 65. When she got her license, it was just walk in and fill out paperwork kind of thing.

I do understand how that wasn't the most ideal situation to back out of, with the location of cars involved, but this person clearly has severe driving issues.

Given she will also be paying (directly or through insurance) for any damage to the other car, I would feel pretty confident that it will ultimately cost her more than a speeding ticket or red light.

And as noted, she will now have a failure to notify tag on her insurance at the least, if not an at-fault accident as well. She's going to be paying for it. Never mind the embarrassment of being a worldwide laughingstock.

Yeah lets forget that she is probably feeling humiliated. Hopefully this motivates her to seek out a proper driving school (not the clowns that passed her or accepted cash under the table to pass her) where she can learn to drive. If she keeps parking like this in lots it's a matter of time until someone else gets her on their camera and adds to the humiliation.

I'm a little surprised to find out that this was in fact real. I was leaning towards it being something set up with the intention of going viral.

She had to have been high or something. No one can be that bad at driving.

Pretty brutal quote by an officer in the Sun who commented on it. No idea if he was involved in the investigation, but

Quote:
Police officers used their own discretion in not laying a hit-and-run charge, said Thrower, who speculated on the driver’s mindset.

She might have been having a bad day...I think she probably panicked, people were in windows looking at her,” he said.

I'll bet the guy whose car got hit had a worse day.

That's funny. I wonder if a man would have been given the same benefit of the doubt.

I was once rear ended on Christmas day. I was stopped on a single lane highway waiting to make left hand turn onto a road and someone just ploughed right into me (an older lady with kids), I suspect they were speeding. I was there for a good 15 seconds too, so it wasn't like a sudden stop. The police deemed it to be no one's fault and even made a statement that no one was seriously hurt and it wasn't worth ruining their Christmas over. I suspect if the roles were reversed, their perspective would have been different.

On the news last night they showed the parking lot from ground level and it was a lot smaller looking than it was from the camera. Frankly, it looked pretty tight, and probably not that fun to try to get out of. That doesn't excuse the hit and run or anything like that, or the ridiculousness of how she chose to turn around, but it does make me realise that she wasn't as bad as that video makes her out to be.

That parking lot could have been twice as small and it still wouldn't be an issue doing what she was trying to do. That was simply bad driving and not knowing your vehicle. She should not have a license.

Still not enough. She didn't get a failure to notify. All she got was an unsafe backing up ticket. $115. 2 demerits. That's a joke.

It is a tight parking lot especially when someone parks along the curb like the red car, but its still infinitely do-able.

The funniest part to me was that she was obviously trying to get to the exit ramp that you can see to the right, she turned completely the wrong way, but what shocked me is when her vehicle is lined up with the front pointing left....theres another exit ramp right there, you cant see it on the video but its there, she could have just gone straight at that point and down the exit ramp instead of trying to turn another 180 degrees.

You could also see that she wasn't cranking the steering wheel all the way before giving it some gas, which would make turning in a tight space more efficient. It was really frustrating to watch. It is like she doesn't know that you can turn the wheel without moving forward or backwards.

She also totally didnt notice when the car beside/behind her left and she had acres of room to back into and turn around.

I honestly believe that she has a rear-view camera in that thing and she honestly just never looked out of her rear window.
