We should have the players compete Hunger Games styles for the numbers below 35 as they open up. Always earned, never given.

Well then maybe Bennett should take that number when it's no longer in use.

Great news to hear. He's earned it an I hope he keeps it up... If the flames can make the playoffs, guys like jooris can be difference makers.
I know it's very unlikely to ever be 100% healthy but if it does happen... It will be very crowded and guys are going to be sent down that probably deserve to stay. It's a good problem to have but will be interesting to see what happens. I already don't like that baertschi has to get sent down despite play well.

Bennett would wear 93 because it is Doug Gilmour's number, right?
IMO if he wants to wear Gilmour's number, he should wear 39 for the Flames just like Killer did.

What's wrong with having some brand recognition on an individual basis? I know there's some BS reason about "not being above the team" but if being a 50 instead of a 5 is what divides your lockeroom, then your team chemistry is terrible to begin with.

Even knowing that they've said that Jooris can keep 86, I'm still going to side with Burke on this policy.
High "vanity number" are generally a holdover from junior or lower when guys were announcing "I'm a scorer and want to stand out from the crowd of regular players!", which is contrary to the team succeeding on hard work and sacrifice attitude that they're trying to instill on the Flames.
I know there's some BS reason about "the value of brand recognition" but if being a 5 instead of a 50 is the difference between a player being happy or not, then he's got some terrible character issues to begin with.

Yes, but isn't the reason that's his number now is because it's DG's old number (not with Calgary).

I know when they call guys up they have something like 30 days to either tell them to get a place or send them down. They can file for extensions in the case of injured players. If they do get sent down, I thought they needed to pay for there place in Calgary but it could be the other way.

Yeah, it is but 93 is cooler then 39, so I hope he sticks with that.

By the same token, if 5 instead of 50 is the difference between the PHO being happy or not, then does he also have some character issues?

Honestly, let him keep 86!

If not, decimal 86 should keep Burke happy.

Dumb question - but have the Flames ever had a player with the number zero? You see it in football but I don't recall seeing it on the Flames, or hockey in general for that matter.

I think the flames had a goon wear zero. I think shortly after the NHL made it so the number had to be between 1-99

Nope, but that'll be Jon Gillies number in 5 years when he's the Flames starter.

Neil Sheehy wore #0 with the Whalers after he was traded from the Flames, but he only wore 5 and 15 while in Calgary.
Marty Biron wore #00 with the Sabres until the NHL discovered that it caused a bug in their stats software and forced him to change the number. He was the last player to wear 0 or 00.

Won't it be a pretty tight squeeze getting them both into that small closet at Monahan's?

Jooris reminds me of a young Marty Gelinas!
I hate that too, but from an organizational standpoint its fantastic. Managing assets is the biggest part of the job. It also sucks that Joni Ortio cant get a sniff, but that speaks to the excellent play of the guys that are here.
If you want the job, you're going to have to take it.
