[Trade] Stars trade Sergei Gonchar to Habs for Travis Moen

Is this possibly a lose-lose trade for both teams? Dallas gets less experienced and weaker (or maybe not) on defense which they were already poor at already, and the piece they get back is an older, less dynamic version of players they already have in Roussel, Garbutt, Sceviour. Montreal gets more than $4 million in cap space eaten up by a 40 year old player that doesn't add anything they don't already have in Subban, Markov, Gilbert, Emelin.

Add in that you can't take Bourque's contract off their books and they spending a ton of money for very little improvement to their club, if any. Can anyone explain this?

Maybe Montreal needs someone to mentor their captain before the whole team turns on him. A little leadership from a guy that's been around the block won't hurt. PK is awesome but some guys may get tired of his chirpy style

Montreal gets a d which they were apparently looking for to solidify their back end. They probably saw enough of tinordi and beaulieu to see they weren't ready. They bring in a d who the coach is familiar with to play sheltered minutes and help on the pp. they move out a redundant piece in Moen who had term left after this year. Dallas frees up a spot for Klingberg who they are really high on and dump a lot of salary which gives them short term flexibility but adds to the payroll for next year. Add a bit of character as well.

So Mtl gets their d and cap flexibility for next year, Dallas gets short term cap flex and a character veteran forward.

Yes, I will grant you all of those points, but my question is: Is either team any better or did either team get something they didn't already have?

I think this makes the habs a lot better and could actually make the stars better too. Montreal gets a pp specialist who can play sheltered minutes, he won't play much more regular time than any other bottom pairing guy but he can step in and hopefully for them make a difference on the PP. The Stars get better by being able to bring up a younger player they fell is better and they gain cap space, they also get a little more grit in the lineup.

Montreal gained an experienced NHL dman to bridge the gap until beaulieu and tinordi are ready for full time duty and stars gain cap flexibility for future moves. So yeah, each team gets something they were lacking. Montreal will show immediate return as gonchar will step in and deliver right away, Dallas may improve if Nill uses the cap space to make further improvements

I wasn't a fan of the Stars d-core before this trade and I know Gonchar is not as good as he used to be, but their d-core now looks like.

I didn't see a ton of Stars games last year but when I did he looked awful and he doesn't really bring the offense to make up for his lack of a defensive game. But maybe I caught him in all his bad games.
