Fair enough - how about just massive crosschecks/boarding and other serious penalties that could prevent any chance of scoring?

Hard slashes that break sticks, basically tackling and keeping the guy in front of the net on the ice.

The offending team would still have to touch the puck though. Unless a scrum were to ensue and the refs blow the whistle because of it, play wouldn't stop.

Should be an automatic goal, just like when a player is hooked/slashed/tripped/etc when they have a breakaway on an empty net.

This. And if your three players were busy trying to break the rules, the opposition would probably score pretty easily. Plus you'd quickly lose all your best PK players to the box.

Well, we actually got to watch Warrener do this in one of the games of the cup run...can't remember which one but I remember 4 of the 5 opposing players were lying on the ice with pieces of Rhett's stick poking out of them at the final buzzer. It was awesome.

Different sport, but 2 years ago in the Superbowl on the final punt from the endzone when Baltimore was giving up the safety Harbaugh ordered all his players to tackle to D on the snap.

Although they all got flagged for holding it allowed the punter to stand in the endzone for 5 extra seconds before giving up the safety. Accepting the penalty would have allowed them to keep doing it.

Would be funny to see all 5 players in a hockey game implore this strategy late in a game

That would be funny in a beer league game, but not in a professional hockey league. I'd fine him.

Just my opinion.

Only problem is that if they do tie it, you're pretty much screwed because you'll have to play overtime 5-on-3 as well...
Rhett Warrener did that once to end a 2-1 win over Minnesota. We were already down on a 6-on-3 (empty net), so he just went berserker and laid waste to any Wild player who got within five feet of the net. Ref had his arm up for about 35 seconds, but we never touched the puck. Probably could have called about four cross checking penalties if he wanted.

How about the actual offender (the goalie) has to go to the box and can't be replaced by a goalie.

Kypreos just gave the guy a tongue lashing over the phone about this on Hockey Central @ Noon. He thought it was pretty low class.

Ah Kypreos, the irony never escapes me, but it obviously does you.

Its a grim day when Nick Kypreos is the arbiter of 'class.'

So it was smart before they made the penalty shot rule.

You didn't have to reply so condescending you know..

Isn't any penalty in the last two minutes when you are already down 2 men an automatic penalty shot instead of a penalty.

What was the name of the hall of fame coach that when down 2 men in the last two minutes, as soon as the puck was dropped, he'd send an extra player over the boards (intentional too many men). The NHL changed the rule for that.

Terrible play. I wish he had been punished more. He was on hockey central on 590 this morning. Seemed fairly proud of it. There is no place for plays like this in the game.

There is absolutely no real punishment to the goalie in this situation. A penalty shot vs. one shooter is better than the two he was facing. If he gets a penalty, it's not actually him serving it. This is the definition of unsportsmanlike conduct, but the refs were handcuffed by what the rules would allow on this.

I'd would like to see the rules changed here. The goal needs to be automatically awarded in this situation, furthermore I'd like to see a game misconduct given to the goalie, removing him from the game. Punish both him and his team for this behaviour.

Hahaha awesome!

I love the backlash. "How dare you DISRESPECT this game where we use sticks to hit a puck into a net"... like it's some sort of great institution.

What he did, is the schoolyard equivalent of taking the ball and going home. He's not going to play in that situation, so I guess no one can.

Anybody who thinks this was good or smart needs to give their head a shake.

Childish yes, but I thought it was pretty funny. Want to stop it then make a rule against it, just like with Avery and his stick antics
