this was complete BS as it most likely would have ended up as a goal, there should have been something more than just one penalty shot; maybe another penalty or something. This just encourages people to find ways to break the rules....surprised the canucks haven't don't this yet.

Some guy in Yahoo comments posted on the official rule; that if a player was in a shooting motion and he did that it would've been awarded a goal but the players were still coming in thus the penalty shot. I can see them changing the rule now to a straight goal if a situation like this comes up again.
It would seem like the refs could have called a penalty shot plus 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike. Maybe add on a 10 minute for someone to serve too.
I agree, this would have been the best way for the ref to address it, in the NHL I am sure it would have played out this way too. Good for him for getting away with it though.
Pathetic. They should change the rules mid-season to further discourage this.
Since both players had clear breakaways, they should make it that both players get penalty shots if the first player misses or that both get to go simultaneously to simulate the 2-0 that was prevented originally.

That's calling two different rules for one infraction, which I doubt the rulebook allows for.
That said, I think they should change the rule so that an action like that results in an awarded goal AND an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. An awarded goal at the very least. What Leggio did is conduct detrimental to the game.

Really, no different than when Avery tried to use his glove to blind goalies. It's really a shame that there needs to be a rule written down to stop players from doing something everyone knows is pathetic. It's not like Leggio was the first goalie to ever think it would be better to just knock the net off. Most just have more respect for the game than to do something childish like that.

Another situation where I feel like you can game the system is if you're killing a 5 on 3 at the end of the game and protecting a lead, the goalie should just knock over the net every 10 seconds until time runs out.
Sure you get like 5 delay of game penalties, but you're not in any worse situation, and the other team doesn't have enough time to really set up a play. And you get to make line changes and such every time.

Except for the part where deliberately pushing the net off in the final two minutes is a penalty shot. So yeah, not so smart.

I always thought you could constantly hold/hack/trip guys to prevent them from scoring. Sure they might call a delayed penalty, or even stop the play, but then you get a faceoff and a chance to get puck possession. Maybe not the most honorable strategy but I always thought it would be hilarious to watch.
Only problem is that if they do tie it, you're pretty much screwed because you'll have to play overtime 5-on-3 as well...
