A case of what have you done for me lately.

Except that Doughty was NOT the 25th man on either Team Canada roster—not by a long shot. Excellent and compelling arguments could be made that Doughty was the best (or one of the two or three best) defenseman in the last two Olympics, and he was easily the best defensemen in the playoffs last year.
He is a damn, damn fine player.

Awesome. I've been looking forward to seeing how his skillset translates to the NHL.

You had to know we'd start getting bit by the injury bug...too much has gone right for this team. Backlund has emerged as a solid part of the core of this team moving forward so I guess it's fitting he's injured too. Lets just be glad we're still doing well with these injuries.

Which is why a few people on this forum should be embarrassed by their behaviour from when the opening day roster was announced.

The way this team plays flat-out every night I suppose injuries were inevitable. It seems a bit silly now, though; Backlund, Stajan and Colborne on the sidelines is going to make things pretty interesting/ropey. It'll be fun to watch Granlund and Ferland, though.

|
To add to this, in the most recent Sochi Olympics where we saw best on best, Doughty was the best player on the ice and it wasn't even really that close IMO.
Outclassed every Canadian player and defencemen, with Weber being not too far behind.
Keith is a fantastic player but Doughty is on another level.

Most of those guys are just severe Baertschi fanboys, so they're probably still pissed off

My opinion is that when the slogan "earned not given" began, Treliving underestimated how close some of our prospects were to the NHL.
In his press conference announcing the opening day roster he says "We have a deeper pool than I thought." amongst other things which were hardly an endorsement for such players as Setoguchi.
In other words the slogan was a bit of a mistake.
I'll see if I can link the video.

This has me wondering if we are in "after Christmas" timeline now. I have a feeling this will be slow healing injury. Disappointing, have really liked Backlund's game so far this season. He's been showing a lot of determination.

I don't think that's necessarily true. People who thought that moving overpaid vets and one-way contracts while maintaining cap compliant would be solved in a matter of a few days, weeks or even months are mistaken.

It was fine. Really the only guy who got the shaft was Jooris and he's a borderline guy anyways. Granlund was hurt, Ferland was coming back from a serious injury and could have used the games.

Last season there were only three trades in total in October, two of them in the last days of the month. This year there has not been a single trade since the season started. Extremely quiet early season trading seems to be the norm now. Besides, with the recent injuries, I don't think Treliving is too eager to get rid of the few healthy vets we have left.
It might easily take until the end of the year before anything happens.

I would have liked one more rookie forward to make the team which means I wasn't enthralled with the Setoguchi signing. As has been said with all our recent injuries, he may work out but for a team rebuilding to have only one rookie doesn't seem like a plan.
I wasn't looking for trades of our vets like some others around here who want to trade most of them, just not a signing of a borderline vet.
oh yeah and it didn't have anything to do with being a Baertschi fan boy. In my prospect rankings, I had him at about ninth behind 4 others from the Heat.

considering Setoguchi is being used as the 13/14 forward and healthy scratched the majority of the games, I am okay with him being on the roster and a prospect getting actual ice time in Adirondack

You're right. It's a pretty reasonable usage for a borderline player. He keeps the players honest in practice because he CAN play an NHL game, but also leaves ice time at all levels for players the team is more committed to. So far the Setogouchi signing has actually given guys more ice time, not less. Unexpected but awesome.

If Backlund's out long, then this is Granlund's time to shine.
I hope he sticks as the 2/3 center and keeps Colborne on the wing where he's clearly better suited.

I would much rather build my team around Stamkos and Doughty than Malkin and Ovechkin. No contest.
Really looking forward to seeing Ferland play.
And no, the slogan wasn't a mistake. The organization is doing exactly as it dictates that they should. Thinking that the opening night roster was somehow the one and only measuring stick for that was a figment of some peoples' imaginations and is entirely their own problem.
Gaudreau, Jooris, Granlund and Ferland have all earned a chance. Vets have watched from the press box. Pretty straight forward.

Losing Backlund for any significant amount of time is really going to hurt. A couple of games ago I saw him leaning on somebody who had the puck and he went down on the ice. He just laid there flat on his stomach before getting up. At that point I thought he must be hurt, but he played the rest of the game. Obviously he was hurt.
The PK is really going to suffer, as is our puck possession time, timing sucks just when Hartley makes a line of Gaudreau-Backlund-Byron which played great vs. Montreal (even with a hurting Backlund) that the line has to be broken up.
Get well soon Backs, hope surgery is not needed!
On the flipside, very excited to see Ferland make his NHL debut and Granlund play his first game this season.

I didn't get a chance to see the Montreal game, so I watched the second and third last night. His injury was really obvious with the benefit of hindsight

I called it in the game thread. You could tell he couldn't give his usual 110%.
