Wow. Who knew injuries would pile up this quickly.
Good to hear Ferland finally get a shot in the NHL.
Great opportunity for Ferland but I find it more intriguing that Sven isn't even getting a sniff of NHL duty at this point if he's not even on the radar with so many guys injured.

Backlund's in-ability to stay healthy has now officially moved into the realm of "bad luck" to a huge and frustrating on-going problems that is impacting his value and ability to be a key part of this team.
He is a very effective player who is still improving. I have no issue with his game at all. He has become the player he is despite various injury setbacks since he entered the league, and I would argue that the most detrimental injury was a fluke broken finger. I wouldn't write him off as injury prone just yet. If anything, his injuries will cost him at contract renewal time. The Flames will be able to retain him for less money, which is great for the Flames, but kind of sucks for Backlund. I hope he gets back soon, but he has to be 100%.
Jeez, would it be prudent to go out and sign someone like Andrei Loktionov to a two way deal for the season? I know there's Knight and Reinhart left in A but wow things too a dive real fast. I don't see the downside of signing him, either gets called up and earns some NHL time or bolsters the C depth in Addy while the others get their call up.
EDIT: Bonus points for plucking a C off of the UFA list that EDM can not sign to help their terrible C depth.
Bennett- done
Backlund- done for a couple weeks
Colborne- could be back tomorrow, could be back next week
Stajan- Aye Caramba 6 weeks
Thank the gods Granlund was sitting right there waiting for the call.
If the Flames were gunning for the post season and in the same scenario, then maybe you take a shot at a band-aid solution. The team simply can't pull a Feaster and start claiming/signing/trading for terrible reclamation projects or long shot NHLers to plug a hole. This is why Treliving says the road to the Flames goes through Adirondack. The team is rebuilding so take it as a chance to see what some of the other young guys can do for a short period of time.

I wouldn't be looking to sign anyone let alone trading for someone. It would be a different thing altogether if we were going to be a playoff team, but in year two of a rebuild with the best draft in may be 20 years coming up I can't see management being too eager to bring someone in.
Best draft in 20 years? That's a tad bit of hyperbole. Best since '03 maybe. So a decade but these points are semantics.
I still think the Flames will finish with a top ten pick but there's no way. absolutely no way they can tank all the way down to the bottom of the standings even letting it happen naturally. At some point you're still going to have to sign or trade for some players either for the farm or the main club.
I like a Loktionov type signing because he may be a fringe NHL'er right now, but he's a 24 year old fringe NHL player right now. same ballpark as Reinhart or Knight. A zero risk medium reward signing. and plugs a hole where there is one right now and you can sell the chance of opportunity.
I wouldn't be too sure about a guy like Brodziak though, McClement is a face off guy isn't he? In the same vein as a Malholtra? I mean is the cost isn't too much why not. Bolstering depth is never a bad thing.

Considering none of the guys injured play the same position as him, not really

Sorry, meant 10 years, on phone and must have it the 2 instead of 1.
Or put Jones with Bouma and Bollig and have a Ferland - Byron - Jooris line. The injuries to Stajan, Backlund and Colborne certainly made this more difficult.
Even if Ferland has been doing great and deserves a call up, a little surprised Reinhart or Knight wasn't given a nod based on position.
I think you want to call a guy up when his confidence is peaking. I could see the argument for Knight or Reinhart but Ferland is feeling it like he never has as a pro. That's why I think you reward him right now.
Dang.. it seemed Backlund was definitely slightly off / a step slower this year so far..
Excited about Ferland but worried about our centers now.. Too bad no Bennett.
4 centers out on the season. Abdominal strains are hard to get rid of 100% during the season.

Plus a few of the guys up are natural centers and can switch to the middle with Ferland up

Pretty sure the Flames have a player out of the lineup long term in every forward position at this point and time so quite confusing how you came to that conclusion?
If Sven isn't on the callup list before Jooris, Granlund and Ferland at this point in his development, with the team in dire straights, its pretty obvious he's quickly falling off the teams map.

Look at his performance in Addy so far.
