I'll add myself to the chorus of voices that would rather see the Flames try hard and winning some games versus tanking for a high draft pick. Let's enjoy this!

Don't think anyone is saying that, that definitely isn't a reason to give up a lottery pick.

Regardless of whether the Flames pick 1st or if they pick 10th though, there is still a way to build a cup contender either way. If they somehow manage to land a potential top pairing defenseman with the 10th pick(unlikely probably, who knows), would they really be that worse off than getting McDavid/Eichel? Of course the latter scenario would be better, but ultimately both cases would be good for the rebuild. If the Flames did play well enough that they get the 10th pick, it would be due to some big seasons from our goaltenders and vets - and I would expect management to capitalize on that and trade them for maximum return. I view it as either we suck and get a bottom 5 pick, or we get a lower pick plus an additional late 1st or 2nds. It's still good in both cases and not getting a top 5 pick wouldn't necessarily be negative.

Save the navel gazing for 5 years from now when one of those guys eliminates us in OT, game 7.

Nah, the Oilers will never make the playoffs let alone eliminate us in game seven.

We're sat 9th overall and hold one of the wild card spots in the Western Conference. I can't imagine it's going to last very long, so we should enjoy the winning while we can.

It is going to be a long season. Gio or Brodie go down this team is in the dumps just like last year. I would love to get a top 3 pick this draft it will certainly speed up the rebuild adding an elite Center prospect or stud Dman.

I do not want this team to tank however. If anything keep on plugging away like they are showing a ton of heart and effort even when they are down early. If the goaltending holds up then this team is playing meaningful games past the holidays and makes the season itself more entertaining. I feel that in less than 2 years the Flames have past the Oilers who claim to be rebuilding for nearly 5 years. Having a true top D pair helps but it is the coaching, culture, and compete that puts the flames far ahead of edmonton.

Keep in mind that we have either 2 or 3 games in hand on 9 out of the other 15 teams in the conference and 1 game in hand on the other 6 teams. Once those teams catch up in games played we will slide, really it's a technicality that we're even holding a wild card spot.

Then again, we came out 4-2 on a tough 6 game road trip which was a ton of travel, was against strong opponents and with the flu going through the lineup. The way I see it is that to make the playoffs (yes I said it) we have to be at least .500 on the road, so this trip was a win for sure!

So yes let's enjoy! As for goaltenders killing our chances at a top 3 pick, keep it up because it's awesome!

Flames didn't tank the last two years, and we got Monahan and Bennett. Plus some good picks deeper into the draft.

Lots of teams have regressed last year whereas we have played better hockey since we've gone a year of rebuilding under Hartley. You can obviously tell that we are way more comfortable with him as our coach and for that, I can't see us drafting in the bottom 5. If we want McDavid, you best be prayin' to the hockey gods for the lottery win, because that is the only way we're getting him. Besides, there are plenty of solid prospects in the first round, but everyone is too focused on McDavid.

Can we re-title this thread 'Flames Goaltending is Killing It'?

I think we'll hold our position in the standings for a bit. With a 5 game homestand I think we can rack up some points here. Should be able to win 3 or 4. Also considering the momentum the team is coming home with.

All blogs and the media outlets have calgary finishing last and the worst team in the league. In year 2 I have no expectations on this team. I cheer to win every night but when world thinks your gonna lose every game it's a nice eff you to everyone.

Um, strictly speaking, the only way anybody is getting McDavid is the lottery win. Even the 30th-place team will have to win the lottery to pick first overall.

(Obvious, I know, but it amazes me how many people forget this. You can suck your way to a last-place finish, but you can't suck your way to McDavid. I would love to see the Oilers finish last by about 20 points. Then all their fans could salivate over McDavid for months, and then be surprised when some other team wins the lottery.)

For us, I think we are drafting 6-12th. Realistically, probably 7-10. But what I am saying is that rather than just looking at the top 3 prospects in this draft, we should be glad we are creating a winning culture and can still draft a solid player in the range I just specified.

"creating a winning culture" is such an overused term. Lots of teams don't win until they do. You're likely right on your other points though, I definitely see us out of the top five. Thankfully there's a lot of talent this year.

I've been saying this since the end of last season, I didn't think the Flames had a shot at McDavid or Eichel in the first place.

Too many teams will be pulling the plug on their current set ups this year to get a better shot at those two.

It really doesn't have anything to do with Ramo/Hiller. Too many external factors will prevent the Flames getting a top 2 pick. If anything, the Flames goaltending duo is setting up to prevent the Flames from picking top ten. Still though, this is a deep deep draft upcoming. Flames will still do well when their turn to pick comes up.

If Hiller and Ramo continue to have good years, do you think the Flames try to trade one to a contender? Would be nice to get another 1st rounder in a deep draft.

Don't forget our other goalie on the ice, Lance Bouma.

We're not going to get a 1st rounder for either of our goalies in this draft ... or most drafts really
