Speaking of stability, a friend managed to royally fubar his Windows 8.1 machine (*cough* pr0n *cough*) and he asked me to fix it. Explorer.exe wouldn't load, corrupt files all over. Even the best has its problems.

Fixed it in about 15 minutes. The built-in 'refresh' function is the best thing, ever. All his documents and crap were retained, but the OS was put to factory fresh condition.

Skipping 9 makes no sense. Using the "alternate" rule, 9 and 11 are supposed to be the ones people buy, skipping 10.

^Who cares? 7, 8, 9, or 10 make no sense anyway, the actual software versioning still pegs it at 6.x.

Windows 7 - NT Kernel 6.1
Windows 8 - NT Kernel 6.2
Windows 8.1 - NT Kernel 6.3
Windows 9 10 - NT Kernel 6.4

I've read that they skipped 9 because there's so much code like
Code:
if (osName.startswith("windows 9"))
to check for Windows 95 and 98. It's just a rumour but it makes sense.

There's also good reasons why the version numbers are still in the 6's.

I was at a conference this week and sat through a session regarding windows 10. microsoft is going to add direct upgrade support from windows 7 before launch.

They also said that they are calling it Windows 10 because they don't want the public to think that this is merely an upgrade to Windows 8. It more or less a completely new operating system that will work on many different platforms - PC, tablet, phone, console. It looks really good so far.

I just tested it today; upgrade from W7SP1 to W10 Technical Preview already works!
