I personally found Windows 8 to be, yes, different from previous versions but when it came down to it very easy to use. And fast. Still is fast. Never really had an issue at all.

I don't understand how so many Windows 8 haters have never heard of that site. A quick download and your Win 8 machine is usable in the exact same way as your Win 7 machine, but with all the nice under-the-hood improvements that 8 brings

I still have Windows Vista and the next move is gonna kill me. I freaked out when I saw Windows 8 and like your dad I asked where are my menu bars and such. In the end I got my machine fixed.
I still don't get Windows 8. I just downloaded an update...and it made it look more like windows 7.

I actually like the start button bringing up the Metro interface.
I guess that makes me weird. I far prefer doing anything on my Windows 8 desktop compared to my OS X laptop.
I agree....well I don't have a Mac but do have a work machine with different windows version. I've actually found it very intuitive once the initial shock and frustration wore off. And that literally took under an hour of true computer usage. Perhaps like you I'm weird.

Agreed, 8 is fine if you know how to make it less irritating, but it's irritating having to make an OS less irritating.

Maybe it's just me, but installing software is quite literally the easiest possible thing I can/could do when it comes to general maintenance. Balancing an overclock on the edge? That is time consuming.

You always have to install software on a new computer to make it usable (browser, flash, office products, etc), this is just one more that literally takes 30 seconds to download and install. I find it no less irritating to do on a new Windows 8 system than having to go into Folder Options to make sure that file extensions are shown
Not everyone is power users like us, the average PC user isn't going to install that software. The average person isn't going to turn on file extensions in their folder options or even understand the benefit. My mom simply refused me installing Windows 8 on her PC even after I insisted I could make it an identical experience to Windows 7.
There's a reason most reviews deemed 8 to be less than stellar... not saying I agree with it.

This is where you went wrong.
Anyone I do tech support for, without charging them a fee, has purchase the model I tell them to and to put exactly what version of software I want on their computer.
I refuse to support Thunderbird or WordPerfect. I don't want to deal with annoying hardware support at Asus, and I never, ever want to figure out why your Samsung printer is a giant PoS that wont print anything even though you bought it for $39 on sale.

Depends on what success you're asking about. From the perspective of the architecture, all the 'under the hood' bits, 8.1 has been fantastic. Performance, security, everything going from 7 to 8 was a win in that regard.
From the perspective of commercial or enterprise success....
