It's not like that class has established itself with regular NHL players as chances are no matter who they pick they are still playing in the AHL. Even if he pans out to a 2nd line winger I would call that a success and right now that looks to be where he may end up if he can ever get his head on straight. If Sven turns out to be a wasted first round pick it's going to be all on him and nothing to do with the Flames. The Flames made the right pick that day but Baertschi needs to fulfill his end of the bargain and that is to advance from a top junior player to pro to which he's simply struggled.

If the Flames Brain thrusts had evaluated Baertschi and found him to be a bad fit at the beginning of last season.... You Know when CP all thought he might be a contender for the calder... they should have traded him for the previous years #13 pick.... Gromley..... who was taking his time developing and was looking at a full year in the AHL due to Phoenix's Defenseman depth (and NHL 1-way contracts)
My guess that CP (as a group) would have thought that the Flames were idiots and gotten robbed on the trade.
Now I am pretty sure that the Flames management team (and 92% of CP) would think that would be a great trade for the Flames to make.
Gormley got sent down by Arizona ... let's find out some quote/twitter about how upset and disappointed he and his dad are and his ex-girl friend all are and get this trade started.

So you compare what-ifs with things that never happened and draw a conclusion? You even tossed in pseudo-stats by guessing 92%.

It isn't a matter of whether he's good enough. People need to get over this notion that everyone on the NHL roster should be better than everyone on the AHL roster. The point of a development team is to develop players. If a player's development is better served by ice time in the AHL than the NHL, even if he's better than some fringe veterans on the NHL roster, then the AHL is where he should be playing.

It's kind of cool listening to the fan and hearing Pat mention CalgaryPuck.
It's entirely less cool when it's in response to some loon caller overblowing this "Sven's dad" tabloid thing and having Pat mention it in context of "Yeah, I read THAT on CP too."

Every community has their lunatics, thats why we build insane asylums.
We here at CP simply refer to ours as Fire On Ice....

Outside of his disasterous first 20 or so games when he was sent down last year, he is about a point per game AHLer. Depending on your definition of "dominant", he is pretty good at the AHL level offensively.

He's been okay in the AHL but the problem is that guys like Granlund have been better. Hard to justify giving Sven a spot over Granlund if you are going by last year's season. Granlund is hurt right now but if he can pick up where he left off last year you have to believe he's above Sven on the depth chart.

I hope the Earned Not Given crowd will recognize that if Granlund secures a regular spot in the NHL before Baertschi.

Why?
Have the Flames ever even ONCE stated that Sven needs to score more? It was never about his offensive game. It was about his complete game.
Toffoli plays on the defensive-oriented LA. That team has scored less in the regular season than Calgary has in 2 of the last 3 years. If someone makes the argument that Sven is being mistreated and held back because he scores at the same rate as Toffoli does, then I will make the same ridiculous assertion that Calgary as a team is being treated unfairly by the NHL and held back because they score goals at a better clip than LA.
Toffoli learned to play a complete game. He does everything to help that team win. Baertschi has a (in my opinion) higher ceiling than Toffoli, but he has developed his game slower. Sven will be an NHL player - and I am betting a good one, but as of now he is DEFINITELY behind Toffoli.
This is what becomes irritating arguing with advanced stats guys sometimes. I love stats (advanced or otherwise), but I can't stand it when people focus on a few stats that fall incredibly short of painting the complete picture, but it just conveniently proves their point.

Very good post.
I hate to be picky but last year when Sven was sent down there was expectations of 10 shots a game and lighting up the AHL.

The question has always been whether this was good enough for a player like Baertschi. He is easily a more naturally skilled player than Max Reinhart, and yet struggled to keep pace with Reinhart offensively in the AHL. Of course, part of the reason for that was his focus on development on the defensive side of the puck, which has improved tremendously But I would suggest that the Flames legitimately want to see more.
I don't get the sense from any of the interviews with management and coaches that anyone is disappointed in Baertschi or in any way concerned about his development. On the contrary, it does seem like there are only a handful of small gaps for him to fill in his game, and the belief is that the best place for him to do that is in Adirondack, and not the Flames' press box.

http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/10/08...fathers-words?
Quote:
Baertschi, who arrived in Glens Falls, NY, on Wednesday, found himself in the spotlight yet again after his father Hans Ruedi and agent Andy Rufener were quoted in the Swiss paper Blick with less than flattering comments about the fact he was sent to the minors and about coach Bob Hartley.
“Did you see one quote from myself in there? Not one,” Baertschi said. “That explains the whole situation. I didn’t get a call from them. It would have been nice if they called me and I could explain the whole thing, instead he goes to my dad.
“My dad, he’s an emotional guy and he wants the best for me. That’s why I love him. He does everything he can for me, to support me, but he was too emotional about the whole thing. I didn’t even know they called my parents and they called my agent. I didn’t hear anything.
“When I saw the article, I was shocked, too. It’s something you don’t want to hear. His emotions took over and he said some things he shouldn’t have said. He called me later and when he saw the article said, ‘He didn’t write it down the way I said it.’
“He’s not as familiar with the media as I am, so he made some mistakes. He just over-reacted and didn’t make the right decision.”
Baertschi’s father said that his son under Hartley is “put in a straitjacket” and “the two will probably never be friends.”
It’s easy to assume Baertschi’s father is repeating family conversations, but the 2011 first-round draft pick said that’s not the case.
“I would assume the same thing if I saw an article like that. My dad, he knows hockey but to be honest with you, we don’t talk much about hockey,” Baertschi said. “I’m not a guy who goes home when something goes wrong at the rink and calls his dad crying and complaining and stuff. That’s not what I do. I never go to my mom and cry. That’s not what I do. I’m here in North America pretty much by myself and gotta handle it. I can’t cry to my parents.”
As disappointed as Baertschi was when he was demoted, he said a couple of days have given him the time to get his head in the right space to work his way back to the NHL.
“The last few years have been a learning process, not just as a hockey player but as a person, too,” Baertschi said. “I’m dealing with this so much better than I would have dealt with it two years ago or even last year. And I’m kinda proud of myself. Those tough times have made me where I am right now.
“The main thing for me is I want to win hockey games. I want to be the player I can be,” he continued. “The focus is on myself right now, play the best I can. For that, it’s best to not hang (my head) about what’s happened. I’m excited about this team. There’s a lot of great guys on this team and there’s a lot possible.”
|
Sven is a pro. He is happy to work his butt off and I'm sure he will be a top NHLer. The management is right. He has some gaps left and it doesnt help they signed Raymond and Johnny was impossible to keep off the team after his preseason. Its simple. He will go down to addy, someone will get injured he will come up sometime as long as he does his work in Addy.
Our future top 3 LW are already in the system.
Gaudreau
Baertschi
Klimchuk
We are so damn lucky to have 3 LW in our system with 1st line upside and little chance of busting.. Lets just stop making a big deal about Svens attitude. We dont know the guy and all indications are he is a smart kid who is determined to make the NHL no matter what. I saw a number of his post game interviews in Abby and he is serious, blunt but realistic and honest with him self. I like him. If he wanted out we would know about it a long time ago.
I am 100% sure this kid wont bust. All this will make him that much more humble and less complacent when he makes the big squad and stays up.

lol, great to see that.
Really puts some perspective on how ridiculous this whole thread was with the venom, chicken littles and massive over-reactions. Amazing how many drama queens there are here.
Great to hear he's going to work like a pro and I expect him back up in the bigs sooner rather than later.
Really not much more to say after that article.
