Don't really use the app on my phone for actually watching the games but hopefully nothing gets wrecked for AppleTV or PS4, will be a bit of a waste of 99 bucks otherwise.
|
$99 gets you regular GCL but at pricing outside NA. Worst case scenario would be that you'd have the same blackouts everyone else has. Whenever I used GCL on a friend's connections, I'd have blackouts all over again.
I never used mobile on my home network, always used the Apple TV or Xbox and it worked great all year.

Anyone have the promo code from their NHL 15 game that I can have? Gonna be moving to Vancouver so this feels like my best option. $179 is pricey though so I could use the $25 discount..

So if I'm in BC, will all Flames games be available on Rogers Sportsnet? Will I need to get Sportsnet West? If so, there's no need to get Centre Ice at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sportsnet NHL Blackout Explanations
Due to regional broadcast regulations set forth by the NHL, Sportsnet game telecasts must be blacked out in certain areas of Canada. The broadcast boundaries for Sportsnet’s regional NHL games have been set by the NHL since the network’s inception in 1998 and Sportsnet is contractually obligated to follow them.
To help our viewers better understand how they are impacted by blackouts, here is an outline of where specific team telecasts are available:
Vancouver Canucks:
Any Vancouver Canuck games on Sportsnet Pacific or the Sportsnet ONE companion channel Sportsnet Vancouver Hockey can only be seen in British Columbia and the Yukon.
Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers:
Any Calgary Flames or Edmonton Oilers games on Sportsnet West or the Sportsnet ONE companion channels Sportsnet Flames and Sportsnet Oilers can only be seen in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Note for Manitoba residents: As of the 2011-12 season, NHL blackout restrictions dictate that all Flames and Oilers games on these channels are blacked out for viewers in Manitoba.

I hit up a Rogers rep on Twitter and I got the impression that this would be the case.
If you have local cable/sportsnet, you can opt to watch the game on either sportsnet or gamecentre.
If you're a cord cutter you're SOL.
I could be wrong, this was just the impression I got. For what it's worth I'm holding off on buying gamecentre until the season starts, see what the actual live game experience is for subscribers.

Weird. I don't use a dns service outside of hockey season.
Renewed mine on Saturday after I called last Monday and the Automated message said There was no Auto renew this year.

NHL pumps up GameCenter Live, reinvents mobile app for 2014-15
Edit:
More info from a CITYTV story ( Rogers’ GamePlus puts hockey fans on ice during NHL games)
Quote:
Fans will have access to different camera angles that they can use in various ways at games. They include:
-Follow the puck from one end to another at six metres per second via a Sky Cam, which sits at the 200 level in the Air Canada Centre
-Referee’s helmet features a Ref Cam that lets fans see the face-offs, breakaways and goals
-Goal Line Cam gives a overhead view of the ice, right above the offensive rush
-Get an inside view of the players’ benches, and catch the action from inside the blue line, which is what separates one team’s defensive end from the another
-Follow any player during the game via a Star Cam
|
|
Apparently these new features of various camera angles, multiple replay angles, ref cams, etc are only going to be available to Rogers customers who use GameCentre Live.

Hence Monday’s unveiling of the GamePlus feature within Rogers NHL GameCentre LIVE, the company’s live-streaming service that will carry most of the games Rogers televises now that it holds the league’s Canadian national broadcast rights. GamePlus is an app that will run on mobile and tablet devices that Rogers hopes will have enough bells and whistles to satisfy the hardest of diehards and geekiest of geeks – new camera angles, exclusive video, analysis, replays and your social media feed.
“Exclusive to Rogers customers, it is the ultimate second-screen experience,” Rogers Media president Keith Pelley said. “It allows our customer to select replays, pick camera angles, be the producer, director and get inside information.”
But here’s the rub for Canadian hockey fans. If you want to call up the view from the ref cam , or see eight replay angles compared with the regular viewer’s two or three, you need to become a Rogers customer.

This Rogers exclusive bull#### is really starting to piss me off.

Not sure if already posted, but here's the link to Rogers' info page on blackouts.
Looks like some big service improvements, namely nationally televised and playoff games now included.
Just when I thought I might not re-up...

so if I'm reading that page correctly, there is no blacked out games for Alberta. This is good news. I still don't like the price, and I'm not sure how Gamecentre is going to work with the appleTV app.
Edit. nope I didn't read it right,

Wonder how long it will take the CRTC to get involved with all of these Rogers exclusives.
I'm still curious about the games on Sportsnet One/360 on GCL if you don't have those channels. It sounds like they will be available, but want to confirm before I pony up for the 2nd half of the season.

I feel like they're bending over backwards to claim there's "no blackouts" and just muddying the waters as a result. The chart on that page looks *somewhat* promising however, as it appears roughly 1/2 the season (47 games) won't require a cable subscription/provider verification to watch.
However that also may simply be because of the Rogers Wireless promotion for the 1st half of the season.
They could make this so much easier if they just straight up said this:
"A cable TV subscription to Sportsnet is required to watch local in market games on Gamecentre."
Without out the double speak before/after.

Yeah, their wording appears deliberately evasive at points.
My read is that, assuming you don't have cable TV, all local region Sportsnet broadcasts are blacked out (just like years past), but this year national broadcasts aren't blacked out and, most importantly, playoffs aren't blacked out.
So fo Flames fans in Calgary, you should be able to stream all Flames games except for the 35 shown in your local SN region.
Admittedly though, the double-speak may have confused me and I may have it wrong.

Yeah it's annoying for sure.
That be said I'll probably bite the bullet with a DNS work around again.
Any idea on the Apple TV app status? Looks like iOS apps have/will be updated for Rogers branding, but currently Apple TV just says "unavailable in your region"
EDIT: Hopped on the Live Chat on Rogers site and it looks like we'll be able to login to the Apple TV Gamecentre app with the "new" Rogers.com account.
