Yes. Everyone on the roster earns their NHL pay.

There's something relieving to know that we will likely finish in the bottom tier of teams again this year, but instead, we can focus on getting our young guys more experienced and seeing who emerges as NHL talent over the course of the next six months.

Maybe Bennett will light it up in the beginning and force Treliving to keep him. It happened with Monahan, you never know.

Have I missed something? Has he been given medical clearance to play?

For 1 - 9 games, yup. I would say so. After that, doubtful.

No, sorry for the confusion. Just speculating. But Treliving may keep him around and try him out anyways after the injury is done to see how he performs.

Thanks. Hartley is clearly very impressed by the kid.

Do players on 9 game tryouts count against the 23 man roster? If so, someone would need to be cut to make room for Bennett. Otherwise they just need to find another chair in the press box and decide who to scratch.

I can definitely see Bennett being rewarded with 1-9 games and his skill level might be second to Johnny on the whole team but keeping him all year would be a mistake in my opinion. I don't think the Flames keep him all year but will reward him for a solid camp where he got nothing but praise from the coach.

I did hear Kerr say last week that Hartley was a huge reason why Monahan was kept and he could be a big reason Bennett gets a long look. From a fan standpoint having Monahan on the team last year gave me something to look forward to in the future. It appears Johnny might be that guy this year and I suspect we see more of Sven, Granlund, Wortherspoon, Porier, Ferland, Reinhart etc so there is not the big need to get Sam in the lineup so quickly IMO

I don't care if he scores 5 goals in his 9 games...we still need to send him down. It's not about his skill or what he produces right now...he's just not ready physically. You can't force that.

Everyone on the NHL active roster counts on the 23-man roster.

I believe the answer is yes and yes.

1 MIKAEL BACKLUND C
2 SAM BENNETT C
3 BRANDON BOLLIG L
4 LANCE BOUMA C
5 PAUL BYRON C
6 JOE COLBORNE C
7 JOHNNY GAUDREAU L
8 CURTIS GLENCROSS L
9 MARKUS GRANLUND C
10 JIRI HUDLER C
11 DAVID JONES R
12 BRIAN MCGRATTAN R
13 SEAN MONAHAN C
14 MASON RAYMOND L
15 DEVIN SETOGUCHI R
16 MATT STAJAN C
17 TJ BRODIE D
18 DERYK ENGELLAND D
19 MARK GIORDANO D
20 COREY POTTER D - IR
21 KRIS RUSSELL D
22 LADISLAV SMID D
23 DENNIS WIDEMAN D
24 RAPHAEL DIAZ D
25 JONAS HILLER G
26 KARRI RAMO G

Take away Potter from the list because he's injured, it still looks like there are 25 players left (including Bennett). As far as I can see they still don't have room to keep Bennett here for a tryout.... and even if they don't they still have one player too many on the roster come Wednesday.

What am I missing?

Edit: I just saw the solution... Send Granlund back to the AHL and Bennet back to his OHL team. Now the Flames would be down to 23 players. If they keep Bennett here for a 9 game tryout, someone else, other than Potter, would have to go on IR or be waived to the minors.

That's my view as well, so unless we get a surprise demotion today it means Bennett goes back to junior as soon as healthy, which would be the right decision IMO

Yeah, looking at the numbers, looks like you guys are right. Was really hoping he would get his 9 game tryout. Just doesn't look like there is room for that unfortunately.

Totally agree. But if he plays lights out during his stint (if he gets one), he's going to force Treliving's hand.

I don't think he will play extraordinarily good to warrant a stay, but like I said, you never know.

In this case, I don't think so. Monahan had the added advantage last year of us being a bit like the Oilers this year - we had a dearth of centres and he was almost needed to step in. But Stajan is here long term, Backlund has solidified himself, and of course, Monahan is now established. Even if he didn't need to grow into his frame a bit more, Bennett is not served by playing a part time or fourth line role. Give him a few games to get a taste of what's to come, then send him down to dominate in junior.

Or Sam Bennett has a severe injury which could require a "lengthy time" on the injury reserve.

This is my guess.

No one was put on waivers and there are 23 healthy bodies in camp. Therefore - at the moment - there is no room for Bennett.

However, it is possible that his injury allows the team to put him on IR. That would enable him to stay for now. Then, should one of the 23 get injured and go on IR, there would be room for him to join the team when deemed healthy.

My guess is that this is the plan for him at the moment.

That would be convenient if it worked out that way
