As Diane put it, this gives RJ a great amount of leverage in his next deal.

Sign him long term to big value, or he walks in a year.

If Johansen is as good as he thinks he is, the Jackets will be happy to sign him for $6+ in 3 years.

If he turns out to be a one-hit wonder, they let him go UFA.

Meanwhile, they have him for 3 years at a bridge-type price.

I fail to see how it's a bad move for the Jackets. Seems like everyone got kind of what they wanted here.

If he's worth it then, he'll get it. If not, he'll be traded. The risk to the Jackets simply isn't that high.

The CBJ get the price point they wanted on the first two years and Johansen got the big money final year to set the high minimum value on his next contract that he wanted.

Funny how fans have slung a lot of mud at Johansen and his agent, but Doughty pulled the same tactic and people don't seem to regard him as an entitled jerk.

Doughty had more than one good season.

Doughty is #1 D-man on 27/30 NHL teams.

QO is at $6M. Not $6M+. They got rid of the 10% raise in the 2005 CBA above a certain threshold. Johanson will be well above that threshold.

I think the point was that any contract forthcoming at that time will be greater than $6m

Unless, he is really bad, I can't see them not qualifying him after three years.

They can also take him to arbitration and potentially get a 15% paycut ($5.1M)

Yes. He was on TC’s Olympic Team in 2010 and was the best defenseman there outside of maybe Keith.

Doughty was, IMO, Canada's top dman on the 2010 Olympic Gold Medal winning team.

Absolutely. Doughty was a Norris finalist in his 2nd NHL season.

When he was a rookie, I remember thinking - and saying a lot - that he was the best 18 year old defenseman I had seen since Bobby Orr

if Johansen wants he can get a 1 year deal at that point and be a UFA at 25, there would be nothing the Jackets could do about it

they lost any type of leverage they had, unless he's a one hit wonder, which they obviously aren't hoping for

my guess is he gets traded before he signs another deal with columbus

every player can go UFA after 7 years if they so choose. All he has done is not give up any UFA years yet, which is just another way of saying bridge contract.
