People remember the Backlund story from last year? Most (including me) thought his time as a Flame was coming to and end and now he's an integral part of this team moving forward. I think Sven will be back soon and become a regular, this roster isn't the final roster.

No surprise. Pretty sure all three will get call ups.

If he can't handle the adversity of getting sent down he can't handle the adversity of being a top tier pro.
Bottom line.

I don't think his comments equate to him not being able to handle adversity.
I think it would bother me more if he wasn't upset at getting cut.

I could be wrong, but I think Tinordi was referencing the shrill panic from some of the people on this forum. There's more than a few who seem to think that the Flames are "breaking" Baertschi because they aren't coddling him.

Just bumping up this post for the people getting news late as the assignment and Sven's comments spawned 8 pages of debate.

Am I the only one who is more upset about Jooris being sent down, he is the one that should feel slighted after his terrific camp.

Jooris' comment, as reported by Sportak, about how he's proud he opened eyes is the absolute truth here. When camp opened, he was an AHL project. When camp closed, he was a final cut and somebody that will almost certainly make his NHL debut this year. His moment may not be today, but it is coming, and it will arrive far, far sooner because of the camp he had.

Except the Flames made a mistake sitting Backlund in this first place. His advanced numbers were always fantastic and Hartley was being ignorant.
When he was finally given the opportunity and more than 10 minutes of ice a night, he proved he was the best forward on the team.

It all comes to down to his on-ice reaction now. Remember when Gaudreau was cut from the WJC team in 2011? He was pissed, but his focus immediately shifted to proving everybody wrong and subsequently lit up the league in the second half of the season. That's what Sven has to do now - suck it up, play his his heart out and prove that Treliving and Hartley have made a mistake. If he does that, he'll be back up in no time. But if he sulks again and feels sorry for himself, I'll be worried.

Sven has shown at times he can be a dominant offensive player. Did not see that at camp so down he goes. He will be playing with some very good players in Adi so let that motivate him to perform well and get himself a call up.

I am slowly starting to sour on Sven. Whether it is his fault or fans expectations that are souring my perception of him, I don't know.
There is far too much discussion on his emotional state, his need for reassurance, and how he expects to be on the team because he was drafted high and scored some goals here.
He was average in the AHL last year. He had a good camp, but that doesn't warrant a right to a position.
Getting a roster spot is a privilege, not a right.

Compared to what a guy gets in the AHL? Yeah, that's a boatload of money. Especially when it's tax free and you add in the ancillary benefits of limited number of games and very little travel. I don't know anyone who does not see a ten fold increase in salary as making a boatload of cash.

Kids are going to get the chance to play. Sven didn't come in and force anyone out. He was okay this preseason but not amazing. I think he is one of the first call ups. We will see a bunch of kids this year. Good on Johnny for making it out of the gate

I completely agree, I just wish some of our vets would have that same mentality...

I don't think it's fair to sour on Sven at this point. Firstly, he's just a kid. He turned 22 the other day. Second, fan expectations of him were way too high after he scored 3 goals in 4 games as an emergency call up. Like I said, the guy is just a kid, and the pressure got to him.
The thing we should focus on is how much better he looked this pre-season versus last pre-season. He is in way better shape, skates stronger, and plays better defensive hockey. This effort shows where his attitude really is; he wants to get better, improve, and make this club. I wanted to see him in the NHL for this reason, but he can still learn more in the AHL. He's an exciting prospect that we can look forward to seeing as a full time NHLer if not this season, next.

Question...
When is the roster finalized? Tomorrow? And do 4 more people need to be cut before?

How anyone can "sour" on Sven based on one quote is ridiculous.

All players that are going to be waived have to be put on waivers by 3:00 pm MST today. Tomorrow is too late.
