Aaron Vickers was on the Fan this morning and mentioned that when he talked to Sean this summer that he was now weighing in around 205/207 about 10 pounds heavier than his playing weight last year.
Hopefully he's got his leg strength up with the gain, even 5% quicker would be huge for him.
According to the 30 in 30 article on NHL.com, that's exactly what he focused on:
Quote:
"The biggest thing for me is to be quicker. I've done a lot of sled work for leg power and acceleration. It's really helped out and I feel great on the ice."

Glad to see Sean putting on some muscle. Even with a 20+ goal rookie season, I didn't think he was that impressive.
Were you expecting something flashy from him? That's not how he rolls. I love his two way play and the fact that he has a scoring touch, something most Flames players lack in.
Really?
He had a phenomenal rookie season. What else was he supposed to do?
I can see what AlGQ is saying. He had a great rookie season, but a lot of his goals came at the start with an inflated shooting %. He wasn't driving play, but is smart enough to know where to be and when to shoot. He was not dynamic nor consistent (but he was not expected to be)
This being said, my expectations for him are HIGH. I expect him to be a Stall type player which would be fantastic!

Can't see how he wasn't impressive, especially considering your notion of him being inconsistent is largely explained by his injury (that not only saw him miss games, but struggle to get back up to speed after it). He closed the season strong.
Considering his age and stepping right in to a near-last place team, it's pretty silly to suggest his rookie campaign wasn't impressive overall.
He looked impressive, but was not as impressive as he looked, if you follow me.
The only thing Monaghan really showed an ability to do at the NHL level was to score tip-ins and garbage goals. And the kid can do it like a champ, there's nothing bad about being able to crash the net and bang one in when nothing else is working.
But he was doing it all season because nothing else was working. I saw him make some pretty plays and not score, I saw him score on a lot of not-pretty goals, but I don't remember more than maybe one goal that he scored more than about 15 feet away from the net.
He wasnt much of a set-up man either, and I feel that his assist totals were a pretty accurate reflection of his playmaking ability at the NHL level last season. I also think his poor possession numbers accurately reflect the fact that he was about as good defensively as you'd expect from a 19 year old rookie.
I think he's got a bright future, and I project him to be a 30-35 goal player in his prime.
But last season was more puck-luck, and a good nose for garbage goals than an indication that Monahan is already a top-tier player.
His goal totals are very misleading in terms of where his overall game is.
He had a very impressive rookie season, but it wasn't as impressive as 22 goals makes it look.

^ Any time an 18/19 year old steps in to the NHL and scores 20+ goals, it is as impressive as it sounds.
Saying he did nothing but largely score garbage goals and tip-ins is really selling him short:
The biggest thing that stuck out for me wasn't the number of tallies, it was his poise. He had a knack for knowing where to be and when.
Look at that play where he scored the game winner against New Jersey. The way he kept the puck in to keep the play alive and then snuck off behind coverage to find himself open was something you can't teach.
The way he froze Lack on that one goal and then shot was patience, not a garbage goal.
The list goes on. Yes, he has a lot of learning to do to round out his game but remember he was playing one of the worst teams in the league and missed considerable time to (and recovering from) injury.
Really odd there's a handful of you needing to downplay his season. It was a very impressive campaign for a teenage rookie stepping in to play centre. No need to degrade it from being labeled impressive.

I agree it wasn't impressive if you look at every NHL player out there. That being said for an 18/19 year old kid it was very impressive, especially at the end of the season. Context is everything

Monahan was a very quiet player this past year. Oh we talked about him lots, but on ice he was very quiet. He would go unnoticed for large portions of the games and then all of a sudden he is in the right place at the right time, goal!
Cammaleri was an expert at this. Was Monahan impressive? Depends on how you see things! Did he dominate? Never! 18/19 year old with 20+goals in the nhl his rookie season? Damn impressive.
What impressed me most with Sean was later in the year. He started to throw his weight around and battle more. Shy young kid at first wondering if its ok to hit nhl players....... later he started doing that very well. Give the kid a few more years, I think he will be a leader, yet not the best offensive player on the team. I love the fact he hangs out with McGrattan. Kids got skill, but if a little McGrattan rubs off on him he could be a fan favorite for many many years. I see him as a young Daymond Langkow, add a little more grit, little more offense, a young Gary Roberts.
Never the less, maybe I am selling the kid short too, I think we got a player on our hands.
Monahan isn't the type of player to pull you out of your seat but he's a very good hockey player, efficient too. I'd like to see him paired with Colborne for years to come. They could stand up to any other first lines in the league if they progress like I hope they do.
what impressed me was his ability to stand in traffic and act as if he's not focused then he'll put his stick down at the exact moment the puck is coming and shoot it in to the dismay of the defenders. My favorite was him scoring on Tim Thomas and Thomas visibly swearing.
