I could be wrong but I think the league provides the pick not the Flames.
Which is why this move would be completely an upside for the Flames.

Looked at their RW depth lately? Arguably worse than Calgary's, and that's saying something

Fair enough, but I dont think anyone would really expect him to step right into an NHL lineup.

The longer this goes, the more it benefits the Flames IMO. If he was set on signing in his hometown, and had no other thoughts, it would be done by now. He's obviously contemplating different options.

Meh, it could go either way.
IIRC Detroit was the heavy favourite for Dekeyser for the two years he could have left college. Dekeyser still went through the process of reviewing and listening to other teams offers before still choosing his hometown team of Detroit.

His college line mates/buddies are here which means he'll at least be with one or both of them even if he doesn't make the team. And if he doesn't make the big club... He'll be closer to home for his first year on the farm team.
Would be great if he signs with the flames but I'm not going to hold my breath... Calgary is a long way away from home for him. His brother is with Florida who also seem like a team ready to improve and he will have a good chance to make that team too.
|
Not sure why it's a long shot IMO. I think Calgary has just as good a chance to sign him as the rest who are in the mix. Sure, there are other teams who are also in contention, but with Gaudreau and Arnold in the system, Calgary is far from being a long shot.

I think it's more due to him being in a position of not having to rush. He's waited this long and training camp isn't for a while. Might as well spend a day or two meeting with other GM's to see whats out there. Also good to start building relationships with other GM's around the league.
I definitely hope he is persuaded into joining Calgary, but the man has options and ties to several teams.

I think a wealthy organization with good player relations help. I think of Moneyball where the guys had to pay for their own pop from the vending machines and how players talk to each other about different organizations. Plus agents would know this stuff and know which GMs and teams are cheap and troubling to negotiate with.
I've read that Jacobs has a bad rep of being cheap. Florida obviously shouldn't have the same player development resources and staff as the Flames do, but organizations like the Blackhawks have a bad rep (ie, with Hayes) and they do things like have a 2nd combine for undrafted players, so money isn't everything either.

Hayes will do what he feels is right for him and who can blame him. I just hope he sees Calgary as a good fit!

Friends are important to a guy this age since there will be some culture shock and adjustment to the locker room. I've heard about guys being so nervous they afraid of asking for simple things, so its good to have allies in the locker room.
But opportunity has to be his #1 priority. He needs a team weak on the RW.

I have a feeling he'll sign where he will find the NHL the quickest and expectations aren't high. Calgary meets one of the two criteria, but its the second that will be hard to match. Hayes signs here he's going to have huge expectations to meet.

I don't see why our expectations would be any higher than other teams. No chance on earth we're a contender for years. He can develop his skills along with the rest of the team.

Expectations from who? I doubt 95 per cent of fans have heard of the guy. There isn't a whole of media hype around him either. Hayes would have about as much expectations as Corban Knight.

Hope conroy is on point for this one again. Load up the private jet with gaudreau, Arnold, and Conroy. No one can say no to conroy and a private jet.

Hearing that Kevin Hayes camp will spend Sunday narrowing list of NHL suitors, then speak with 4 to 5 finalists on Mon.

As someone that hasn't followed this story:
Why won't he sign with Chicago?

Various theories....too many good players ahead of him at RW, they ditched his older brother Jimmy, he wants to play elsewhere.....

Some people also believe that the decision was Chicago's and that they feel a 2nd rounder would be worth more to them at this point.
