Johnny plays all year in the AHL, Flames get McDavid/Eichel in the draft, and Johnny wins the Calder next year.

I'd rather see Gaudreau have an amazing year, just so he proves everyone wrong once again. Not asking for a PPG, but I wouldn't be as surprised if he makes the team full time and has the most points.
I like McDavid/Eichel, but it's not the end of the world if we don't grab one of them. There are still good defensive prospects in Hanifin/Kylington, and those aren't available, then there is still Werenski and Sprong.

I don't see the flames getting McDavid or Eichel, guessing we will finish 4th. Want McDavid badly though!!

There's always that chance of winning the lottery. But then again, the Hockey Gods are never in our favor.

Winning the lottery in a year like next where the best prospect in a decade is available would make up for years of no luck worth the hockey Gods IMO.
McDavid, Bennett, Monahan is insane center depth comparable to the Pens when they had Crosby, Malkin, Staal

Hypothetically though it would be a lot more coming back then just that pick. The key here is Lindros type deal. For Lindros they received in the trade the rights to eventual Hart Trophy winner Peter Forsberg, as well as Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Steve Duchesne, a 1st round selection ( Jocelyn Thibault) in 1993, a 1st round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals— Nolan Baumgartner) in 1994, and $15,000,000 cash.
If Buffalo Offered Reinhart, Myers or Zaradov, their pick in 2015 (lets say third to take McDavid and Eichel out of it), and another prospect or picks you wouldn't consider it?

Gaudreau leading the team in points? I'm excited about him too, but expectations are getting out of hand. Let's keep in mind this guy is a first year pro. For all we know, he might spend half the season in the minors.

Reread my post. I said I am not asking a PPG out of him, that's tempering expecations. Secondly, I said that he had to make the team full time in order to achieve leading the team in points. That's still tempering imo, because the kid is perfectly capable of hitting 55-60 points in 82 games. No one on our team is getting 60 points.

Is there any risk that there is an expansion team next season? I only ask because if that were the case, there is a good shot that Calgary would get their pick pilfered. Maybe its years of bad luck, but I could just foresee this happenning to us.
At what point would a new team need to be announced in order to be assured that this wouldn't happen?

Don't think McDavid will be as good as Crosby and doubt Bennett is near Malkin but you are right it would be amazing depth if they all pan out the way we hope and expect.

Yes. Can't say too much yet but your speculation is correct and hopefully the new addition(s) aren't granted top pick automatically.

Damn, what would you put the likelihood at??
I imagine that there might be significant uproar from the current mgmt of NHL teams that any new team is placed at the end of the lottery (i.e. picks #15th)

I can't see any potential expansion team getting the top pick automatically. Maybe something in the top 5? Even that seems like too much. They should have to suffer through a bad season like everyone else.
How was it done in the past?

Not like he has much competition. Just saying.
Cammy's gone. Hudler? He had a good year but what should we expect, 50 points?
Gaudreau could very well hit 50+ with his consistency.

Not asking for a point per game out of a rookie player is tempering expectations? This is news to me. Do you actually see Johnny having a McKinnon like season?
I think people need to temper their expectations even more than you are suggesting. Young, small players may require some time to adjust to the pro ranks.

Do you have inside info? I would think its way too late for an expansion team to start 2015-2016. I think the earliest would be 2016-2017?

To me, a reasonable solution for an expansion team would be to pick before the playoff teams. In this instance, that would mean picking 15th and 16th (assuming 2 expansion teams)

I've tempered my tempered expectations. And every single time, Johnny proves me wrong and does 100x better than what I'd thought he'd do.
I'm still tempering, but now it's safe for me to expect a little more than what I originally thought. It's a good thing, he's going to make management bite their nails in where to slot him next year.

Flames and gang don't need to prove anything this year. They need a franchise player. For all I care, Burke should stash Monahan, Geo, and any top 6 players in IR. They just need to tank at the right time this season so that they can entertain one of the top 2 picks in the 2015 draft. The worse thing the team can do is to over achieve and stock up on average talents. It's definitely way more advantageous to under achieve for the upcoming once-in-a-lifetime draft for the Flames.
This is probably pretty obvious to most, but I don't understand the reasoning behind the posts for Gaudreau or Baertschi breakout season. It's like, the Flames are barely into their rebuilding process and some of us are expecting the Flames to be a Cup contender in 3 to 5 years! Maybe some people don't realize that rebuilding an NHL franchise is not the same as rebuilding a WHL team like the Hitmen.
