I also think Goodfellas is a better mob movie than the Godfather. The Godfather is dealing with the higher ups and is full of class, like opera or classical. Goodfellas deals with 3 guys who weren't even techincally mobsters (they were associates), is grimmy as #### and is more like rock and roll. And that May 11, 1980 sequence is probably the best sequence in film history, and Scorsese provides the soundtrack to end all soundtracks.

Tried to post this last night when the forum went down.
For me Gladiator is barely even a top five Russell Crowe movie. LA Confidential, Master and Commander, and Cinderella Man are most definitely better movies; then I'd say The Insider and 3:10 to Yuma are right up there with it. Then there's even A Beautiful Mind and American Gangster which some may consider superior, but I do like Gladiator more than them. Gladiator, Braveheart, Scarface, and even Shawshank are great "guy" movies, which is a reason so many hold them in such a high regard.
I couldn't even wager at how many times those are watched during in high-school or college dorms for movies like those. Now they're all very good movies (except possibly Scarface), but when everyone has seen them countless times they become beloved by many.
It's great to see Last of the Mohicans get some love on here too. I thought I would be the only one to consider ranking it in the top five, but I could never get enough of it. There's a couple subpar performances I suppose, but still an excellent movie overall.

Shawshank doesn't fit your list as well (of "guy" movies) as the others. Shawshank is universally loved by most, man and woman, film fans. It is simply in a league above the other movies mentioned, and there's nothing that really qualifies it as a "guy" or "college" movie.
My opinion of course, but I've hardly met a woman who didn't adore that film
Some really fantastic films listed, including many already listed here. The lesser celebrated ones are really interesting though. For instance, if anyone hasn't seen The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford I highly highly recommend it. Really incredible film. Very quiet and understated.
I definitely think Shawshank is a "guy" movie. Mainly because there are no female protagonists in the movie, and the only one of any note cheats on her husbands of many years, and is murdered in the first five minutes of the movie. Everyone may like it, but I think it appeals to men a tad more, most Darabont movies do I suppose, as barely any of his movies have female protagonists of note.

I always find it difficult to come up with a list of my top films because there are so many different ways you can rank them. So instead of listing the 5 best films I've seen I'll go with the top 5 I constantly find myself watching.
1. Star Wars Episode IV
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
3. Terminator 2
4. Wedding Crashers
5. Gladiator
HM: Back to the Future, Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction and Fight Club.
Is it ok to do a top 5 for each genre, I find it difficult to do this unless I can list top 5 from each Genre.
We will be doing top 5 lists for other genres as per Harry Lime's suggestions. I'll start another one in a few days once I feel like this thread is exhausted.

I felt I should include my 1st honorable mention that didn't quite make my list: Cinema Paradiso, a Giuseppe Tornatore masterpiece about the love of film and how it acts as a backdrop for our lives. Ignore the quality of the trailer because it's horrible, but I don't want to give away any spoilers so this is the best clip I can find:
Also features a soundtrack and score by Ennio Morricone who is legendary (for instance, wrote the iconic soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly). My wife walked down the aisle to this piece:
If you haven't yet seen it, it's an absolute must watch for any cinephile.

This is why I'm terrible at lists, every time I come back to this thread I'm reminded of another great movie I loved and have to reconsider my own choices. I'd probably give a nod to Starbuck in favor of Gladiator or Zombieland when I think about it
