I think that's the beauty of it.

If you're lazy, isn't easier to walk less distance than to turn your power assisted steering wheel? The majority of people think this way, which is why the majority of people park next to the door in the scenario you paint in which there is only one vehicle in the parking lot.
Note that, again, I'm not mad if any one ever parks next to me. But in a completely empty parking lot such as the one you drew I'd find it a bit odd.

Lately I've been parking close to the guy who parks like a total ####### so I can tweet it to @DBagParkingYYC.

I had no idea parking was such a contentious subject.
Lucky for me I usually walk to the store so I don't have to stress about the ins and outs of the unwritten parking lot code!
How do bicycle racks work? Do bike guys want other bikes to stay away?

Bikes are a whole different animal. It's not just about parking next to you.
You have to park your bike at exactly a 57.5 degree angle to the ground, with your bike lock levitating in thin air, not touching the bike rack. Failure to do so is grounds for being downgraded to this:

So much hate for "car guys."
Look, they are going out of their way to park further away, leaving the more convenient closer spots for everyone else.
If the lot is full/busy then it's a completely different story. But if there's tons of empty spots and someone with a nice car is parking extremely far away by themselves why would you choose to park immediately next to them? Your alternatives are to park closer in a more convenient spot, or to also park far away if you enjoy the exercise, in one of the other dozens of empty spots that aren't right next to that car.
Yes it's technically your right to park wherever. But said "car guy" has purposely parked far away in order to minimize the chance of getting their doors dinged. They want to be left alone, why not respect those wishes?
Seems like a lot of jealous posters driving automatic beige Camrys here who insist on being "that guy" which is strange since most of CP is supposedly part of the 1% and probably drive really nice vehicles.
It's not any different than being that guy that chooses to take the urinal right next to the other guy in the bathroom instead of one of the other 10 available ones. It's within your right, but why be that guy?

It really is as simple as that. I'm not "trolling" anyone or "being disrespectful to car guys" or any other such nonsense. If you attribute even 1% of my decision-making process when choosing that spot to personal malice against you, you're being paranoid.

Must be one of those local UK parking lots, where you drive on the left side.

Since it's MS Paint time.
Someone parks at the red arrow. It's neither the first spot upon entering the lot, and it's not anywhere near the entrance or where the cars parking close to the entrance is.
Someone that parks there on purpose is doing so not because there's an unwritten rule for parking that all should follow, they're doing so because there's an "unwritten rule" or more a social norm of personal space and general human behaviour (i.e. parking close to where you want to go, or parking the quickest) they're trying to anticipate and act contrary to to achieve their goal of not parking next to someone to reduce the chances of expensive damage by disrespectful jerks (of which there are clearly sufficient numbers to make this a reasonable desire). EDIT: They're not expecting others to alter their behaviour for their own goals, they're trying to anticipate others NOT altering their behaviour.
So someone pulls into that lot, what possible motivation could they have for parking next to the red arrow guy other than trying to evoke a response? If they're motivated by parking at the first available spot, that's not it. If they're motivated to minimize walking distance, that's not it either. If it's just a random spot, there are hundreds of other random spots so it's extremely unlikely to be next to the red arrow guy (that's what randomness means). So what other motivations are there that would result in parking next to the red arrow guy?
I think the answer is the simplest one. A great many people have an extremely difficult time being nice to other people. Even this thread demonstrates that with a high degree of certainty.

^Well said John and Photon. Consideration for others has really has really spiralled down hill lately. Yes anyone is free to park wherever in the lot they want to, just like am free to hold the door open for complete strangers while others are free to let it slam in their face.
People who choose to park their vehichles at a distance from all others have a reason, whatever it may be. A dog in the car, saftey, inexperienced/ new driver, "car guy". A real DB would be the one who goes out of their way to park next to car parked far away. My neighboor who is 65 ish told me while at the bank he parked his Caddy 2 rows back and 8 spots over from the nearest car. When he came out, there was someone pasrked right next to him, so he spit a huge loogie on their windshield. I laughed and told him someone parking that far away was likely an employee, he said he didn't "really care"
If I'm in my work truck (which is huge) I try to park where I have the best in and out access from the lot to the street, doesnt matter how long the walk is really, and we have a pull through, back in parking policy. In the wifes little car I George Costanza it.

For some reason or another, drivers in Calgary just like to be a giant bag of passive-aggresive dicks to other drivers.

Well said, and it's merely the point I've been trying to make along. I'm afraid you're out of luck Photon, because someone will still park there because walking distance is not a factor, but rather some people are too lazy to align their vehicles using the lines like a normal person, but they'd prefer to use another vehicle to align themselves like a 14 year old learning how to drive.
Or am I still misunderstanding you, MarchHare? You are perfectly capable of navigating a parking lot but let your laziness trump your "skills"?

You guys have one thing right, I will probably be going out of my way to park beside expensive waxed cars as often as possible now, because it's gut-bustingly funny to think that someone would be all like
"PARKING? BESIDE MY CAR????? WRAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH"

Well no whenever I've parked far away (usually with rental cars, I'm more afraid of them than anything else almost) and someone parks right next to me also very far away, it's usually nothing more than an eyeroll and wondering what mental process led to the decision.
One of the few times I've ever done it with my car, I got parked next to and got a door ding. I didn't care because 2000 VW, but if I did I'd just take some pictures, get a license plate info and call my insurance if it looked more than my deductible.
